Is it safe to re-heat and eat the remains of Friday's chinese takeway?

Special flied rice (will take out any prawns), sweet & sour chicken balls, crispy chilli beef, chicken & cashew nuts.

Dh is away and the food is in the fridge calling to me, but I don't want to be ill and I can never remember what's allowed and what's not.

It's meant to be a v bad idea to reheat the rice, would have thought rest would be ok though.

MargaretMountford · 18/05/2008 22:00

chuck the rice out

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 18/05/2008 22:01

wouldn't reheat/eat the rice, with or without the prawns. The rest is probably ok, just make sure it's reheated properly all the way through til it's piping hot and cook some new rice. Sounds nice!

you're not supposed to reheat rice, the heat doesn't kill whatever bacteria is in it. Having said that I never take any notice of that advice and haven't died yet. The chicken balls will be a bit soggy, but I usually just blast it all in the microwave and hope for the best.

I have reheated chinese (incl. rice) the next day for as long as I can remember and nver been ill. I always microwave it piping hot though and let it cool down.

expatinscotland · 18/05/2008 22:02

i've reheated and eaten rice with no trouble loads of times.

just makes sure it's PIPING hot.

MargaretMountford · 18/05/2008 22:04

still think you should chuck the rice out though

Wow, I'm glad I asked. I have some Waitrose frozen bung in the mirowave rice which I'll do instead - it's brown so won't be the same but better than nothing.

Diet starts tomorrow - again.

While being treated for campylobacter dp discovered that the answer to OP was no.
however I've heated many takeaways again and had nothing but happiness.

I always reheat rice! Eeek, didn't know we shouldn't.

What I could do to a plate of crispy chilli beef right now.

if it had been last nights chinese then I would probably use the rice but as it was from friday then I would chuck the rice and make my own as rice can be a bit dodgy (and you dont know how long it had been hanging about in the takeaway before you got it) The food standards agency advises throwing it away after 24 hours and that is for rice you have made and stored yourself.

from the FSA:

It's true that you could get food poisoning from eating reheated rice. But it's not actually the reheating that's the problem ? it's the way the rice has been stored before reheating.

Uncooked rice can contain spores of Bacillus cereus, bacteria that can cause food poisoning. When the rice is cooked, the spores can survive. Then, if the rice is left standing at room temperature, the spores will germinate into bacteria. These bacteria will multiply and may produce toxins (poisons) that cause vomiting or diarrhoea. Reheating the rice won't get rid of these toxins.

So, the longer cooked rice is left at room temperature, the more likely it is that bacteria, or the toxins they produce, could stop the rice being safe to eat.

It's best to serve rice when it has just been cooked. If that isn't possible, cool the rice as quickly as possible (ideally within one hour) and keep it in the fridge for no more than one day until reheating.

Remember that when you reheat any food, you should always check that it's piping hot all the way through, and avoid reheating more than once.
