Looking to get more variety in but typically, especially when shopping online, I always seem to stick to the same things.

Beansprouts
Radish (although I'm growing lots atm)

zzpled · 03/05/2025 09:27

My fruit consumption is very mainstream: bananas, oranges and apples. Occasionally pears. I try to avoid packaging so most other fruit is off limits and I just buy it occasionally as a treat.

I prefer fruit over veg so I'm surprised to realise I have a greater variety of veg, some frozen, which makes it easier:

Potato
Sweet potato
Carrot
Peas (frozen)
Beans (frozen)
Broccoli (frozen)
Cauliflower (frozen)

I make lentil and vegetable soup which has expanded from the original leek and carrot and now includes parsnip, yellow pepper, frozen spinach and ginger. Great way to consume a wide variety of veg.

Loveduppenguin · 03/05/2025 09:30

I forgot tomatoes! I love tomatoes 🤣

JDM625 · 03/05/2025 10:04

I order online from Sainsburys but also have a fresh grocer with lots of exotic things. I try to 'eat the seasons' so currently lots of jersey royals and British asparagus. Other than the more regular things, I also like:

-edamame beans (frozen)
-samphire
-cavolo nero
-fennel
-Chinese leaf lettuce
-Choy sum
-Fresh shitake mushrooms

-mangoes (especially the little Alphonso ones from India which are in season now)
-passionfruit
-papaya. Chop into squares and a squeeze of lime juice over the top brings the sweetness out.
-yellow kiwi
-fresh figs
-various melons

@RainbowZebraWarrior must add jersey royals to my list!

Always try and buy seasonally and grow a few of my own so atm it’s radishes, rhubarb, spring onions, watercress, artichoke, mushrooms, parsnips and strawberries.

Plus have frozen peas in freezer and I’m growing onions and garlic.
Have my own apple compote in jars.
Plus usually have bananas, lemons and potatoes in the house.

And always have one of the following salad leaves for lunches such as Romane lettuce, rocquet, spinach or similar.

Salad leaves
cucumber
cherry tomatoes
More occasional than regular buys - pineapple, kiwi, melon, figs, mango

NeverDropYourMooncup · 03/05/2025 11:06

All the standard stuff, plus I like;

Okra - love it in a spicy tomato based sauce with some tamarind for sweet/tanginess
Plantain - shallow fried slices with sea salt and chilli flakes
Daikon/Mooli - is really nice cooked in stock/tamari
Passionfruit
Plums - Greengages are my favourite
Nectarines (I know they're technically standard, but I haven't seen as many available or with the slightest chance of ripening enough to be edible in recent years)
Gooseberries should be a standard fruit, but haven't seen any for years
Tayberries
Rhubarb - especially cooked with fresh Angelica for sweetness, have to grow that myself
Adore chargrilled Globe Artichokes and roasted Jerusalem artichokes.
I get big green pumpkins round the corner, as they're much nicer than Butternut.
Soursop is lovely.

Love but I'm not paying out for Dragonfruit
Would get mangosteen but they're rarely around
Haven't seen starfruit in years
Paypaya and guava's quite nice, but DP hates them, as he does fennel.

Would love to be able to get hold of mulberries and fresh currants

I'm not keen on Taro, cassava's too much like hard work for me and for some reason, lychees taste soapy.

Hoppinggreen · 03/05/2025 11:13

I recently got into Beetroot
I was raised on the nasty pickled stuff on salads so avoided it until I was served a raw beetroot, orange, feta and dill salad in a fancy restaurant
Since then I had had in raw in salads and also roasted in a tray bake curry with chickpeas

goldenretrieverenergy · 03/05/2025 11:25

Apples
Bananas
Berries (whatever looks good. My toddler lives on berries)
Watermelon
Lemons
Mango
Avocado

When in season: I love cherries, plums and peaches.

carrots
celery
shallots
potatoes
broccoli
frozen peas & edamame
spinach leaves for sandwiches
tomatoes
courgette
kale (obsessed with kale soup at the moment)
cucumbers
red cabbage (I add it to the salads, shredded)
greens for salad (whatever looks good)

LandSharksAnonymous · 03/05/2025 11:27

Ohh I love threads like this. I split my fruit/veg between the farm shop and supermarket

English Strawberries (farm shop had some in today - already eaten two punnets…)
Pre-cut Mango
Pre-cut Pineapple
RTE Nectarines
RTE Peaches
Granny Smith
Bananas
Blood Oranges (when in season)
Satsumas (when in season)
Frozen mixed berries (for smoothies and cold soaked oat bowls)
Passionfruit
Watermelon
Dates (do we count them as a fruit?)

Cabbage
Spring Onions
Beansprouts
Sugar snap peas
Tomatoes (the heirloom & heritage ones atm are amazing)
Cucumbers
Fresh Beetroot
Broccoli
Red Onion
Yellow Onion
Peppers
Sweet peppers
Jersey Royals (in Waitrose today - made my day!!)
King Edward (I use these in tray bakes)
Baking potatoes
Sweet potatoes.
Radish

I always try and buy seasonal, except for fruit - I don’t care about exotic or exciting, but I love flavour. So seasonal is best. I’m so excited for summer - I can’t wait to do my weekly shops fully from my farm shop.

Chewbecca · 03/05/2025 11:36

We like all vegetables so I always just look at the labels on where they are from. If they have a union jack on, I buy it. If I really want something that's not British, I'll usually go to Spanish. Never Africa or South America.

Currently we are eating carrots, all sorts of cabbage, purple sprouting broccoli, some asparagus recently, still onions and parsnips too.

Fruit wise I am not so good at sticking to UK, I love a grape! Clementines we eat all winter and apples. Rhubarb is good at the moment and I had my first British strawberries this week.

Buying British generally means it tastes better, it's cheaper, has fewer air miles, supports British farmers, gives variety throughout the year, there are so many good reasons.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 03/05/2025 11:41

We supplement fruit with a ton of fruit from the garden, mostly frozen.

Moier · 03/05/2025 11:52

I'm on my own.. so frozen veg in my freezer.. l buy fresh Leeks and freeze them.. if l know I'm going to use it.. l do love fresh veg especially sweetheart cabbage and sprouts.
Always have salad in and fresh carrots.. lettuce/ tomatoes/ baby cucumbes/ radish and onions.
But l eat loads of fruit. Ocado have just delivered.. Strawberries/ Raspberries/ Blueberries / a pineapple/ a melon/ clementine and apples.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 03/05/2025 11:57

Mine looks terrible in comparison to Pps!

Frozen: green beans, carrots, brocolli, peas, spinach

Tin; sweetcorn, water chestnuts, carrots

Fresh; cucumber, radishes, sugarsnaps, carrots, courgettes, sweet potato, cherry Tom's, grapes, apples, satsumas, bananas, pears, sometimes melon too.

I have ibs and avoid nightshades, so no peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, aubergines. And I can't stomach lettuces either :( most raw stuff is a no no.

Edit: forgot avocado! And frozen stir fry mix, beansprouts.
