Hosting family for lunch late May bank holiday (hoping the weather will be good!)

hoping to host a lovely lunch for:
8 adults
6 children

Some Fussy eaters (quite beige!) and a veggie too.

Didn’t know if there was an option outside of the usual rolls or pizzas or picky bits?

A huge veg lasagne, a big salad, nice bread, a pan of soup (e.g butternut), and then a few dips/pork pies/ sausage rolls/chicken tenders.

Eton mess, fruit and cheese board for pudding.

Do a tapas style sharing platter buffet.

You can mix beige with more fancy stuff.

paella
Meatballs with smoky tomato dip
Couscous with Mediterranean veg
Paprika chicken
Charcuterie platter
Cheeseboard
Bread and butter
Hummus and pate

I’d do a pulled pork in the slow cooker with salad, coleslaw, rolls, chips etc.

BBQ? Whatever you do always have a big dish of nice bread or a nice whole loaf on a cutting board with butter etc, houmus, pates. A cheap way to ensure everyone is full
Do a big pot of chilli and a small veggie one. Serve with baked potatoes and bread and salad.

Pulled chicken
Pulled pork
Taco beans
Avocado
Sweetcorn
Roasted pepper slices
Grated cheese
Sour cream
Salsa

I’ve got guests coming tonight for an NHL Stanley Cup playoffs watch party. A mix of adults and kids.
I’m making mini cheeseburger sliders, fried chicken sliders, chips, onion rings, a massive salad, homemade coleslaw.

OneEdgyScroller · 01/05/2025 20:14

I would do a big salad, a platter of grilled chicken (can be served cold or room temp), a pasta salad and then ham and cheese mini sandwiches. Add some sweets and a fruit platter. Done

I would do a “build your own burgers” with meat and veggie burgers, choice of sauces, fried onion etc

then corn on the cob, salad, couscous, coleslaw etc for sides.

We do Greek style mezze. Mostly home made, tzatziki, melitzanasalata (aubergine dip), taramasalata, mushrooms a la gréque (Keith Floyd recipe), Greek salad etc we don't do hummous as only I like it, squeaky cheese ( can't remember it's name but it's the one you can put on a bbq)

Our main is usually roast lamb or chicken but meatball could also be included.

I'd do warm garlic flat bread, pitta/wraps and a selection of fillings. Feta salad, hummus, grated carrot, olives, shredded chicken, tomato salsa, yoghurt and cucumber dip.

Picky bits etc can end up more work and more expensive than making a dish.

How about one meat and one veggie pasta bake. (I’d use pasta shapes rather than lasagne as easier to eat with a fork if you can’t seat everyone.) Serve with garlic bread and salad.

OR Make a massive macaroni cheese, and serve with pizza, some meat, some veggie.
