Freezing food

Hi all,
In Costco at the moment, ‘The Butchers Hook Cooked Maple Cured Streaky Bacon 500g’ is on offer for £6.99, which is a good price in comparison to Tesco at £3 for 100g. This is obviously a lot of bacon though. Would I be able to freeze it (even though it says keep refrigeratedHmm)? And if so, how would I defrost/use from frozen in recipes? Thanks!

Yes, I'm always freezing bacon.
Just let it defrost in the fridge when you want to use it and cook when defrosted.

It is already cooked and it isn't the best in my opinion. However, we did microwave it as per the instructions rather than use an oven. It doesn't say anything about freezing it though and usually it would have details as to how to cook from frozen or whether to defrost it and it only says keep refrigerated. I think it is a no on the freezing front or you can take the risk

We do however buy the uncooked packs and freeze those packs as they come, raw, then defrost them and cook them as needed. I believe they are cheaper than the supermarket too although it is a couple of years since we have run a price comparison.

@TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOnei wonder if this would be refreezing though as it is cooked alreadyConfused - I’m not sure if it’s ok to do so if it’s been cooked though.

@PaperHatterhmm I’m looking for BLT meal-
deal-style bacon - does it taste similar for a one off? Re: the raw bacon - do you know of any that is the same type as in a sandwich? Grin

Unless the things say "do not freeze" or "previously frozen" or similar, it's safe to freeze. Split it into portions, wrap properly with no air in and freeze. We do that with all sorts of deli meat and so on.
It's not refreezing unless it was previous frozen

PaperHatter · 26/04/2025 12:54

I believe you can get raw streaky bacon (long thin strips) from Costco but we prefer back bacon so get that on autopilot. Streaky is bacon is typically used in BLTs but we use normal bacon because we always have it in. You can take a punt on the cooked bacon. It is about 10 years since we last had it, we did use it for breakfast on Christmas mornings. It isn't awful, it is fine.

As April states it doesn't say previously frozen on it and I would take a chance on it but I am fine taking risks like this.

Sorry, I didn't realise it was cooked.
🤣
