A good cooking salt container - not for the table

I like fine salt by the side of the cooker for cooking. Im a big fan of salt so anti salt people can ignore this thread

But Im sick of the containers that usual table salt comes in. I dont need it in a salt shaker that you have on the table, I need it next to the cooker in a container for easy scooping and pouring.

I usually get something in a box, the box goes raggedy. I get something in a round tall plastic thing and its too heavy and too much comes out at once. I got a small container the last time and the top fell off when I was trying to pour some out and tons all came out at once

Is there a good 'salt container' I can use (Not a salt pig, dont want one of them), I need something that I can pour out of, but easily get the lid off to scoop out when necessary.

And it needs to look nice.

I just use a small bowl - I can keep a few weeks' worth handy for pinching/tipping and replenish when needed.

Thats exactly the sort of thing I need, I wouldnt have thought to search for salt shaker as I thought it was going to bring up small containers

You need a salt pig.

Salt pigs is the name you’re looking for, OP.

I have it in a glass jar/pot with a cork fitted on top - mines a bit like this but more globe shaped and in chunky green recycled glass.

If you are keeping it near the cooker it takes in moisture if its not sealed.

I dont like things with cork tops, I want a screw top, that allows for pouring, and for me to get the top off easily to scoop out if needed. Some of the recommendations so far are what I need, I didnt know they exist, no more raggedy boxes for me!

Thats also why I dont want a salt pig or it sitting in a bowl, I want it enclosed, not just for moisture but also cat hair!!

Google your local potter/pottery club and see what is on offer there. Or get them to make what you want.

We have a small ceramic mortar and pestle that lives next to the cooker. Pour salt from whatever container it came in into the mortar, crush to whatever fineness you like (our default is Malden, which comes in quite large flakes), then sprinkle.

Stirfries · 06/04/2025 12:32

A bit like this, but the pestle is smaller.

I use a jam jar, and leave a coffee spoon in it. Screw top lid, it doesn't get damp. And, free. 😊

I have a glass Kilner jar with a clip top and seal and a teaspoon sized wooden scoop. Works well for me.

You sound as fussy as me, OP 😁

I also hate the idea of salt sitting out getting damp, have very hairy cats, and use a lot of salt in cooking, and I don’t like having random shop containers.

Here’s what I use. I first came across one in a very nice spa hotel and they used them to store bath salts for guest bathrooms. I bought this one online and love it. You can find versions that have more of a “scoop”, but I love that the spoon rests nicely into the lid.

The lid spins away from the base and then locks back in with a magnet so there’s no faffing around trying to figure out where you left the lid. It’s easy to pour from too.

Yes I am fussy! I really like the idea of the sugar pourers above though, that solves two problems the pouring spout and the ability to just open a tight lid and get a spoon in

I use a Le Cruset small storage pot that has a bamboo lid with seal
