Take half a tin of evaporated milk and put it in the fridge to cool....... empty it into a large bowl and whisk with a hand held mixer.

Melt a jelly, strawberry, rasp or blackcurrant, lemon and lime work well, in a tiny bit of water in the microwave on high for 1 minute then with the whisk going at full speed whisk the melted jelly into the evaporated milk, it will bulk up quite a bit more so make sure you have a BIG bowl....... when all the jelly has been mixed in pour into small dishes or a large dish and chill in the fridge. serve with a blob of icecream or if you feel really sinful pour double cream over the top, or whip some cream and pipe rosettes around the edge. I have done it with orange jelly in a big bowl and decorated the top with mandarin oranges and whipped cream, you can do the same with fresh strawberries if you have just a few left..... I am sure the creative among you can come up with some other idea's.

I have also used this method for a change on trifle instead if using just jelly.... it is very rich, so a little goes a long way.

Sound great, must try it

Nappyaddict, I made this in domestic science 30+ years ago, had completely forgotten about it and know my DCs would love it! I seem to remember making it with half the amount of water as usual (ie 1/2 pint) - are you saying you just need enough water to melt the jelly. Thank you so much for reminding me about it and sending me down memory lane!

nappyaddict · 15/05/2008 19:06

My mum taught me how to make it when i was little and her mum probably taught her. I always just used enough to melt the jelly. I suppose you could use more water to make it go further - the flavour would probably just not be as strong.

or maybe your Mum was in my DS class!!! Made it for the children earlier this week and they LOVED it. Thanks for reminding me about it.

I used to make this in DS at school. Ohhh. Thank you for my trip down memory lane

Gonna give it a go tomorrow.

littlewoman, wonder if we were in the same class (with apologies if you were at school a lot less than 30 years ago!)

I'd like to make this, but have 2 different size tins of evaporated milk! How much milk will I need for it? One tin is 170g, the other 410g!!! Help!

cornsilk · 09/06/2008 10:06

Sounds gorgeous - will buy some evaporated milk today.

cositjustisok · 09/06/2008 11:13

Hotcrossbunny I used the large one for one Jelly but think OP mant half a tin of the large one..but I have a large family and would have needed it all. Probably menat just not as strong a flavour formt he jelly..kids loved it and did not notice

hotcrossbunny · 09/06/2008 11:21

Thank you cositjustisok(love the name btw!) Will have a go today.

Think I put too much milk in. It was really sickly and weird. Even dd didn't really like it.

Next time will do it like mum used to. She made the jelly as usual and half set it. Then she whisked in a few tablespoons of evaporated milk and let it set completely. It was less thick and heavy.
