Anyone noticed a reduction in organic produce where you live?

I live in close to a very large town (the north west), so have access to many supermarkets and a few decent farm shops. We have a Tesco, Sainsbury's, the usual lot, plus a Booths a small journey up the road.

In the past year or I have noticed organic produce dwindling in most of these stores, and this week, even the farm shops, whilst stocking branded stuff and local meat, had no seasonal produce at all.

I used to be able to get most of my salad and veg from Tesco organic, but within the past 12 months most of it has been discontinued. Up until recently they offered some decent tomatoes, cabbage and potatoes, all now gone. Shops such as Lidl and Asda also used to offer less but frequent organic options, but they too have cut back.

I did notice much less when visiting family in Lancaster and Cumbria, too. Even a few local grocer's had stopped stocking organic. You do get the occasional offering, something random like spring onion or a packet of pears, but it does seem to be decreasing by the month.

I have also noticed an almost complete cessation of local produce in surrounding supermarkets too, so it has become difficult to purchase in season, local goods in the same timeframe. At this point, I would usually be able to buy local greens, apples, potatoes and such from the UK at both M&S and Tesco, but not recently.

Is something declining? I would blame the economy and such, but people are spending! Whilst more people are struggling in general, the target market for organic produce is still here (locally) at least. Just wondering if perhaps there is less call for it in some areas, since a lady in Tesco told me they had stopped offering organic chicken due to no interest.

I can find it online, from all of the usual brands, but not locally.

I agree😩 also, I’ve noticed the organic stuff I can get from Ocado goes off really quickly. I would hate to go without certain organic things like berries/salad etc. My Waitrose have stopped selling any organic salad leaves.

No one usually cares, or says it's overthinking, but since it cost hardly that much at all to but organic veg, it suited me as a single person.
It often tastes a bit better, but not always, although my main reason for buying it was an attempt to eat how I did as a child. I would have to pay a good bit now for organic mayo, even though they fill it with crap! (so I don't bother with that!).

I wonder if people are just fed up. I am sure supermarkets would stock more if there was interest.

It seems something has changed here at least in the past few years.

I would buy organic stuff if I could afford it but have been priced out in the last few years. I get the impression many families will have had to switch even if they would prefer to buy organic. I imagine there is less demand.

Organic produce is more likely to be highly seasonal and affected by weather conditions and, in winter, we import a lot of fruit and veg by necessity. If conditions aren't optimal then we aren't going to see so much in the shops.

I must admit I haven’t noticed any diminution in supply from Riverford, and never get round to reading the newsletters. I don’t ask much in the way of fresh food from Ocado. There seems to be the usual amount in Waitrose or M&Spencer on the rare occasions I wander around them.

I’m in the South, about an hour from London. I also find my eating habits suit me as a single person.

Seems fine here (South east) UK

Poonu · 31/03/2025 23:21

Also 30 mins from central London

I use two branches of Sainsbury’s, one a bit further away.
One has a decent range of organic stuff and the other is less reliable. (E.g all cuts of organic chicken in one, only breast in the other) I think it’s down to what people in that area buy.
depending on what I’m making I often have to go to two different shops.

Apologies for my superficial response above. TBH anything seems an enormous relief after the Covid years - when I go to the Riverford app I’m not finding myself 9 million three hundred thousand and seventy seventh in a queue - so I’m grateful. Life’s a bit too stressful at the moment to focus more on specifics.
