Casual lunch for Sunday but not a roast

Help - got old friends dropping in to see us on their way to somewhere else on Sunday - will be lovely to see them but I have a crazy busy day tomorrow and not much time to prep - they are staying for lunch but DH says they will not be expecting "Sunday lunch" - what can I give them that's not a soup and sandwich type lunch but not a full on roast? Thanks!

Some ready made quiche, salad, garlic bread?
Ploughman’s?

Something you can either make in advance eg a lasagne you've made the day before and just needs warming in the oven and serving with salad, something casseroley that you prep and let the oven do the work then serve with new potatoes and steamed green veg, I like a chicken in cider casserole.

Roast chicken, new potatoes & salad.
Lasagne.
Afternoon Tea.

Just some simple ideas
Shephards pie
Gammon spuds and veg
Slow cooked curry (Rendang)
Palella
Ham egg and chips
Big fry up
Baked potato and toppings
Burger and oven chips

Sausage mash and green veg

I would roast a chicken and serve with new potatoes, a green salad, tomato and mozzarella salad and corn on the cob.

If I was in this situation I would tend to go to the butcher/deli and ultimately serve:

  • Sliced ham
  • Green salad
  • Tomato salad with garlic and olive oil
  • Crusty bread and butter
  • A quiche

A nice spread - baguette/crusty bread, cheese, ham, quiche, salad, potato salad etc. They can eat as much or as little as they like without seeming rude as they may be planning a big meal later or had a big breakfast.
Easy for you to just put it all out on the table.

Chicken thigh traybake (that’s what I’m planning for family lunch Sunday). Potatoes separate as I never think they cook right al mixed together.

Don't do lasagne, just taken me 6 bloody hours

Hi thanks all, if the consensus is that something like quiche, new potatoes and some deli type salad bits woulkd be acceptable, that's great. I can do a cheese board or maybe some pudding but have literally no time to prep anything, not even a lasagne - but I do have an ocado shop booked for Sunday morning - busy all day tomorrow and then on Sunday am will need to walk the dogs and attempt to tidy my very messy house a bit before they arrive!

Have friends coming on Sunday. Am roasting a chicken & new potatoes, and serving with a watermelon, mint & feta salad, green salad and homemade coleslaw.

Darkclothes · 28/03/2025 22:36

Before reading the replies, I too also thought a quiche, salad, new potatoes, crusty bread etc.

If time if short, there is no harm in ordering a pre-made cheesecake or dessert for delivery, or order the quiche and then adding 'bits' around it. Make a salad, maybe coleslaw or a potato salad, bowl of olives or the cheese platter sounds lovely.

Plus, you’ll have yummy leftovers!

If you've got an Ocado order, M&S rotisserie chicken and some sides - part baked bread, new potatoes, spinach and pesto salad for carbs, various salad bits for veg. Job done and minimal effort other than shoving I'm the oven.
