Gas Barbeques-recommend yours!

We previously had a gas BBQ and used it loads as it was so easy to just cook tea on it. It died after about 20 years and in my wisdom decided that a charcoal would be a good idea -not taking into account that I live in Scotland and anything outdoor in the summer can never be planned-even in the time it takes a BBQ to get ready!

I’m giving into family pressure and getting another gas BBQ-budget up to about £300 but it really doesn’t need to be all singing and dancing…can you recommend yours?

We got one from B&Q - https://www.diy.com/departments/goodhome-attaia-black-4-burner-gas-bbq/5063022508034_BQ.prd basically this one (though about 3 years ago now). It's been fine. Fired it up last weekend for the first bbq of the year and it was grand. The previous b&Q one we had lasted about 8 years and then someone took it off our hands.

We are in the North West and cook outside a lot - it's so handy to send DH out with a plate of lamb chops to cook them on a weeknight - or salmon (straight from frozen).

That’s exactly how we used our gas one-it was so easy to do, charcoal, not so much!

I've had an Outback one for about 13 years now. Still going strong. We bought it in Australia but I believe you can get them in the UK too.

Jeezitneverends · 27/03/2025 14:44

@Hardlyworking I’m sure I’ve seen that brand but I’ll have a look at it -thanks

We've got the Cadac City chef. It's small so goes in the car for picnics, is easy to store over winter, and most importantly all the grills fit in a normal size dishwasher

Can I possibly suggest instead of the BBQ you get a gas griddle which has a stainless steel flat top meaning you can fry onions and peppers on it, not lose things down the gaps as there are no gaps and no flare ups from dripping fat unless that sort of thing adds to the drama of the cook. Dh finds it much easier to clean. Just a thought.

This is mine, had it a few years https://direct.asda.com/george/outdoor-garden/gas-bbqs/uniflame-classic-black-gas-griddle/050756143,default,pd.html?cgid=D33M03G01C02

I have an electric ninja wood fire one - it’s brilliant. No charcoal or gas though you can add wood chips if you want a decent char.

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 27/03/2025 17:13

I was just about to suggest the ninja as per @whirlyhead I love mine and when you add the wood chips and use the smoker function it’s amazing. You can use it to do allsorts as well, bake cakes, slow smoke meats etc! Pizzas fab on them.

Autumn1990 · 27/03/2025 17:21

I just bought a fairly cheap one. It’s one it’s third year and still works fine. DH has set fire to it few time and it’s survived.

I have a plancha for mine so best of both worlds. Also it’s the fat dripping down which actually gives the BBQ flavour as it generates smoke. Plancha is great for veg and smash burgers and we use the grills for steaks, sausages etc

Our BBQ is from Lidl. We got it two years ago after previous (expensive) one was falling apart and it’s just as good. Was less that €200

MattCauthon · 27/03/2025 17:29

Ours is a Charbroil one and it's good in terms of heat and effectivness. But the grill thing is annoying and almost impossible to clean AND the food sticks, so I do NOT recommend it. We're not plannning to get a new one but DH and I have promised ourselves we'll do the research to see if we can get different grills - ie spend a bit of money on good ones to fit the existing BBQ. This thread is a timely reminder that I must do that research. We do have one flat plate which we'd keep.

Jeezitneverends · 27/03/2025 17:57

@MattCauthon if you have grass in your garden, try putting the grills on the grass overnight, I don’t know how it works, but it’s the most amazing way of cleaning oven shelves and bbq grills!

We want to get an actual bbq rather than a griddle, not only for the flavour, but because we have a bbq pizza oven which I’m pretty sure wouldn’t work with a griddle.

I’m an avid Aldi/Lidl middle aisle of wonder shopper, amd I think I’ll keep an eye out for either of them getting BBQs in to see them before I make a decision, but will look at all the brands recommended so far

Ants maybe? V interesting. Am definitely going to try it. thanks.

I am not sure I explained well - it's a gas bbq. It's just that the bit you put the food on is badly designed in ours.

That'll be foxes/rats/cats/other wildlife licking them clean, surely?

Jeezitneverends · 05/04/2025 08:36

@kitchenplans i think it’s more about them sitting on wet grass…either way it works for zero hard graft and I do wash them afterwards!

I would look for a second hand Weber. It might need a clean but it might be immaculate. Loads of sites to get the best out of it.

Jeezitneverends · 07/04/2025 09:01

@TheSandgroper I’m actually away to clean up a Weber charcoal bbq to sell!

Ive some that really annoying thing and asked for recommendations which you’ve all kindly given and gone totally off grid and bought this
https://www.costco.co.uk/Garden-Sheds-Patio/Barbecues-and-Firepits/Gas-Barbecues/Nexgrill-3-Burner-Stainless-Steel-Gas-Barbecue-Cover/p/1468913
It was on offer in the warehouse and it’s cost me £203

@Jeezitneverends keep your weber. Use it at Christmas as it does the best turkey and ham. Absolutely divine. I use it every year unless the fire danger level is too high.
