What to use instead of mini eggs in Easter nests

I’m really sorry if this has been asked before. I had a search and couldn’t find anything which surprised me as this must be a common dilemma! Maybe my search skills are rubbish!

I want to make some chocolate Easter nests with my DD (almost 4yrs). I don’t want to use mini eggs because I’m aware of the potential chocking hazard. Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions of something else I could use that could look like an egg but is safer? Not too sure there is a solution to this as if it’s that shape it’s going to be a choking hazard 🤦🏼‍♀️

I’m leaning towards an empty nest because broken up eggs feels a bit savage in a nest.

You can get solid chocolate mini eggs?? Usually in home bargains. Or chocolate Easter bunnies??

Hohofortherobbers · 25/03/2025 14:15

Mini marshmallows?

Zippidydoodah · 25/03/2025 14:15

Jelly beans! I’ve used them before, for the same reason. You can even get speckled ones!

MidnightPatrol · 25/03/2025 14:16

Could you just put the little chicks in instead?

WinterFoxes · 25/03/2025 14:16

Mini cream eggs. Unwrap them just before serving. Mini Lindt bunnies or Malteser bunnies.

Just make the nest bigger and use crème eggs.

Solasum · 25/03/2025 14:17

One large crème egg per nest. Or just tell your daughter to bite them in half

I second the Smarties

Are jelly beans and mini marshmallows not just as much of a choking hazard as mini eggs? I think you want those slightly bigger hollow chocolate eggs that shops sell for easter egg hunts.

White chocolate buttons

I’d get chocolate mini eggs or white ones if you want a contrast in colour.

When my DD made them in school they used those mini fluffy Easter chicks (not great plastic wise but you could reuse them next year)

Hodgepodge1 · 26/03/2025 14:18

Oh amazing idea with the jelly beans! Then look like eggs but small enough for small throats 👍🏻

Mini marshmallows is perfect too as I have some of them!

thanks for the other suggestions but the solid chocolate eggs and the mini crème eggs potentially pose the same choking hazard as mini eggs?

Get some large white chocolate buttons. Trim slightly into egg shapes. Use very fine icing nozzle and coloured royal icing to decorate with Easter egg designs, or use cake decoration pens. They are flat but should melt quickly if gobbled incautiously. Or supervise child whilst eating mini eggs and teach her how to bite them as soon as they go into her mouth? And do a course in child resuscitation to calm your fears (which is a good idea for anyone who has children)?
