What is your favourite meal that you were not brought up with?

My current favourite meal that I have been cooking almost weekly is lamb plov. I first came across it when I was in Georgia for work and I more or less use this recipe now but I add flaked almonds, sultanas and pomegranate seeds on the top as that is how I recall eating it.

Even my very fussy 14 year old who 'hates lamb' eats it without fuss. (And also without the sultanas and pomegranate seeds).

Plov - Плов

Plov is a rice pilaf with meat, carrots, onions and spices, tender chunks of meat and fluffy rice with lots of aromatic flavors.

Anything Indian. Forever my favourite kind of food, but simply didn't feature in my 60s & 70s childhood.

Mexican and South American food, especially the fish and seafood.

It has common features with the Mediterranean food I grew up loving but is also wonderfully different

Moussaka, aubergines hadn't found their way to my Mother's kitchen! 🍆 🍆 🍆
I love them, and make Patrick Leigh Fermor's housekeeper's Moussaka recipe for a treat!

Macaroni cheese. With Heinz tomato sauce. Closely flowed by cauliflower cheese. Still love them today. 55 years later!

How could I forget cauli cheese! Which I only had upon coming to the UK and now love

Any of the quark-based meals I got to know as a student in Germany. Ditto Frankfurt green sauce & Koenigsberger Klopse.
Vitello tonnato.
Pate de campagne

I barely eat anything I grew up with - we generally had meat and two veg type meals, and Vesta curry (with bread and butter) on Fridays. No lasagne, no stir-fries, no peppers, aubergines, yogurt, rice (except in pudding), pasta (except tinned spaghetti)... We ate very well (apart from the Vestas!) with most things made from scratch and lots of home-grown stuff, but there's far more variety available now.

Thai, stir fry, curries, any fish other than haddock fried in flour, sweet potato and bean chilli, anything marinated, risotto, any pasta dish other than spag bol or lasagne, any salad leaves other than lettuce.

Typical 80s diet really. Fifty shades of beige.

Chicken orzo ….absolutely bloody amazing! Works well with Quorn pieces as well.
