He said that we can plant them (so obviously grow what I would think of as artichokes) but also that we can eat the bulbs. Anyone tried this? what the heck do I do with them?

they make you fart like a steam train

EffiePerine · 12/05/2008 13:46

scrub well, roast with olive oil and lemon juice

I love them but they do give you wind

warthog · 12/05/2008 13:46

They are foul.
Put them in the compost.

witchandchips · 12/05/2008 13:46

my guess is that you've got jeruselam artichokes (bit like a potato ) instead
see
here

Jerusalem artichokes

For your nose if they are

AitchTwoCiao · 12/05/2008 13:47

yes, scour them, cook them, realise they taste of mud in any case and then bin them.

artichokes · 12/05/2008 13:47

They must be jeruslam artichokes (although it is the wrong season for them). They are yummy in stews. Jamie Oliver has great recipes for them.

Bluestocking · 12/05/2008 13:48

They are delicious but the farting is genuinely unbelievable. Don't eat them and then go to a very ritzy fortieth birthday party, which is what I did. Fortunately the music was very loud ...

OrmIrian · 12/05/2008 13:48

jerusalem artichokes.

barbarianoftheuniverse · 12/05/2008 13:49

They make lovely soup, with the added attraction that if you do it today you will be jet propelled until Wednesday.

katierocket · 12/05/2008 13:49

Hmmm..the wind thing is putting me off.

cook them like this with a roast. Gorgeous.

The English planter John Goodyer on Jerusalem artichokes:

"which way soever they be dressed and eaten, they stir and cause a filthy loathsome stinking wind within the body, thereby causing the belly to be pained and tormented, and are a meat more fit for swine than men."

WWB - he's not mincing his words is he?!
I will try them and report back (on the taste and the wind factor).
