Cottage cheese

At my grand old age (mid 40s) I have never eaten cottage cheese in my life.
Am trying to up my protein so bought some FF CC at the weekend.
As I wasn't sure if I'd like it, I googled what to do with it where it could be disguised.

I've just had some with scrambled egg for lunch. Google told me to add the CC to the eggs before cooking. But it's taken me about 10 x longer to cook the eggs with the CC in than it would without. Is that normal?!
Should I have added it after I'd cooked the eggs?

What else can I do with it that disguises it? I'm not entirely convinced I like it, but I'm going to try and persevere. I felt this way about Greek yoghurt too and now I quite like it, so I want to stick with it.

Thank you!

I used to eat the low fat stuff and it was rank. Now have the full fat stuff which is much nicer! I use it with salad, jacket potatoes etc. You can even make pancakes from it! Maybe add it in a cauliflower cheese with soe cheddar??

ScottBakula · 04/03/2025 13:16

I like it but would never of considered mixing it with scrabbled eggs.
I like it on its own / on crackers/ on jacket spuds .
It makes good fridge raider food ( along with olives and cherry tomatoes)

LegallyBlende · 04/03/2025 13:18

Lots of freshly ground black pepper on top, eat with crackers.
Squeeze lime juice over it
Blend it if you don't like the texture.

Get the Longley farm full fat one. Its absolutely delicious and way better than any other brand by far

heldinadream · 04/03/2025 13:20

In a world where so many cheeses are delicious, surprising, divine even, cottage cheese is just bloody disappointing. I cannot get on board with it at all, and I've tried, so many times.

Forgottenmyphone · 04/03/2025 13:22

I always add the CC to the beaten egg before cooking. Takes about 10 mins from start to finish.
It works well in a frittata too and I've seen a lasagne recipe (Simon Rinmer?) with it in. realfood.tesco.com/recipes/crustless-quiche-with-asparagus-and-peas.html

What others have said - the key to delicious cottage cheese is avoiding the horrible low-fat versions - which is often all you can find. Longley Farm is the OG, but you have to hunt for it.

I quite like cottage cheese with Za-atar sprinkled on top. Or Everything Bagel seasoning. Put a big dollop on some steamed green veg....mmmm....

There are also many recipes that use it liquidised (e.g. to make high protein pancakes).

ExtraDecluttering · 04/03/2025 13:30

I like it with chives or spring onion, black pepper, other spice mixes stirred in. I've never tried cooking with it. I don't think Longley Farm is that much better than the supermarket full fat ones TBH.

I was gutted when my Morrisons stopped stocking Longley Farm Cottage Cheese as it’s by far far the best - full fat version which is 6% fat. But I’ve now found it as Asda! Trouble is I don’t have a local Asda! I think some Tesco’s may stock it but I don’t have one of those nearby either.

Morrisons - please bring back my Longley Farm!!

Ilovemyshed · 04/03/2025 13:52

Its great as a topping on a veggie soup like butternut. Especially with a few crispy onions

Ilovemyshed · 04/03/2025 13:53

I second the full fat version though, much nicer!

Crikeyalmighty · 04/03/2025 13:53

I only like full fat Longley farm ( you can get it strangely in Poundland) - but I could eat that by the crateful !

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 04/03/2025 13:54

Urgh. vile stuff, particularly FF.

My nurse friend refers to it as really bad thrush discharge, I can't get past that. Sorry.

marshmallowfinder · 04/03/2025 13:55

I used to make a cottage cheese and spinach lasagne which was delicious. Rose Elliot recipe I think.

I agree with this. I eat mine on rice cakes. I love it.

GeorgeMichaelsCat · 04/03/2025 13:57

Whipping it in a blender is my favourite way of eating it. Once whipped, I might add salmon and dill.

Home Bargains sell it too, if you have one near.

Habibtihayatiii · 04/03/2025 14:05

Full fat only, don't even go near the low fat stuff, it's vile!
I love it the FF stuff, having also only discovered it in my 40s. My 'go to' is to roughly mash boiled eggs with CC, salt, pepper and a little Dijon mustard.... it's my breakfast most days.

ASDespondent · 04/03/2025 14:06

@hideawayforever Alas not but interesting they sell it, and Poundland too. I used to go to Morrisons especially!

Funderthighs · 04/03/2025 14:14

There’s a really nice recipe for a bread made with cottage cheese on Instagram. It’s on an account called “nutrionalevidence” posted by a dietitian.

JuliaPargetter · 04/03/2025 14:18

I love it! Can't imagine it in cooking, though. I like it with chives on top of a buttery jacket potato, or by itself with smoked salmon. It's a cold food for me!

carkerpartridge · 04/03/2025 14:27

I eat it just about daily and find that the Lidl full fat version with dark blue lid is very good and a good price. The Longley Farm one is pricier but very nice. The low fat ones are not great and the flavoured ones tend to have added sugar.

ExtraDecluttering · 04/03/2025 14:33

Yes avoid the flavoured ones and add your own.

Minikievs · 05/03/2025 13:33

Thanks all!!
I've tried again with the scrambled egg-partially cooked it before adding CC and drained the CC more, before adding it. Much quicker Smile
Am going to finish up the tub I've got and then try the Longley full fat version, maybe on some crackers
Also seen a recipe for CC pancakes that I might try

I love full fat cottage cheese but I'd never mix it with scrambled eggs

I just like CC with crackers and that's it
