What is in your UPF-free pantry cupboard?

I've been slowly working on reducing and removing UPFs from our family's diet. Found some UPF in unexpected places like our old tinned tomatoes!

What UPF-free items do you have in your pantry cupboard?

@ShutUpForTheLoveOfGod

we use this for flour wraps
https://www.isabeleats.com/authentic-mexican-flour-tortillas-white-whole-wheat-versions/

for the taco press are you using ground corn flour? It’s actually quite hard to find in uk/ Europe. But if you use wheat flour in the taco press it doesn’t work as it won’t go thin enough and pings back. ( we also tried first)

Thanks for that I’ll give it a try.
Yes wheat flour!!! Oh that explains it, it does keep pinging back, so annoying 😆
Where do you get ground corn flour from?

Caspianberg · 03/03/2025 12:35

@ShutUpForTheLoveOfGod
i managed to find a local producer here in southern Europe, but they won’t deliver

https://www.bakerybits.co.uk/bakers-blog/tortillas-using-nixtamalised-maize-flour-or-masa-harina
This company has the flour when in stock, but also tells you a bit about what the names of the corn flour and how to make the tacos. So you should be able to look up locally using the masa harina or similar name

https://www.mexgrocer.co.uk/food/masa-harina - this Mexican grocers actually in uk might help

This is my concern – as I understand it, anything tinned is generally lined with plastic.

The Telegraph says: Whether you choose to pick the plastic-lined tins or not (the tins without plastic linings are Aldi Everyday Essentials, Morrisons Savers, KTC, Sainsbury’s Stamford Street Co, Tesco Grower’s Harvest and Asda Just Essentials), decant any leftover tomatoes into a jar before storing in the fridge to prevent any further contamination.

Masa harina does make delicious tortillas but the press still isn't brilliant so I normally just roll them. Half wheat half corn gives a good texture. A btead machine is good for making tortilla, naan or pizza dough.

Yeo valley fruit yoghurts aren't bad, they do have maize starch but that's just cornflour which I have in my kitchen! I do greek yoghurt with frozen fruit at home but DS rejects that for lunchboxes as it gets runny and I am really keen to keep his calcium up.

Meridian richer roast peanut butter is delicious, no addtives but so much flavour!

I make my own granola which is full of different plants and upf free, plus I can make it with lower sugar and fat content.

@ShutUpForTheLoveOfGod If fine corn meal is the same as ground corn flour, then Sainsburys sell a brand called Natco, they have bags of corn meal.

I have recently made my own compote that I've then been stirring through Greek yogurt for the kids and it tastes great! I took all the fruit that was looking a bit worse for wear, boiled it down for 20 mins or so blended and put in a hot washed jar. In the end I used 2 pears, 2 brown bananas, blueberries, raspberries, a small carrot and got a jar of compote we're slowly making our way through.

I have a very quick and easy recipe for lemon ice cream

using cream, lemons and sugar - no machine needed

MikeRafone · 04/03/2025 08:08

2 teaspoon lemon zest
¼ cup (60 ml) lemon juice – freshly squeezed and strained
1 cup (220 g) caster sugar
2 ½ cups (600 ml) double/heavy whipping cream
Instructions
Add the lemon zest, juice and caster sugar & heavy whipping cream or double cream to the bowl and whisk with electric whisk just until the mixture thickens to a texture similar to whipped cream. Spoon the ice cream into a shallow, airtight, freezer container or dish covered with two layers of cling film.
Freeze for approximately 4 hours. The length of time will vary, depending on the temperature of your freezer and the size of the container.
Remove from the fridge about 15 minutes before serving to allow the ice cream to soften a little.
To maintain the fresh flavour and creamy texture, it is best if consumed within 5 days.

Yuka app doesn't differentiate between sugar salt etc, I've found the open food facts app is better for UPF as this gives the NOVA scores
