One that actually grinds

But they all depend on elbow grease !

I've given up, & use an electric wet&dry grinder.

You have to pins them grind. I've just got an Ines one.

If there's one thing I've learnt this week it's that you need a different pestle and mortar for different tasks. Can't recommend any but this article is the one I read and should help narrow the choice down.

Mine is a Le Creuset, it's great for grinding roasted spices. I don't really use it for anything else. I've had a marble one and a stone one before and this is way better.

Ive got a marble one and its hard work, discolours and is really heavy. I have to admit I use a small coffee grinder now. Revolutionary!

Eldermilleniallyogii · 22/02/2025 21:00

I have a small marble one and it's okay but not easy

TK Maxx and Home Sense often have loads

4C0rners · 23/02/2025 05:37

Wondering if granite would be better than marble for spices .

My marble one has a slightly rough texture inside, the inside doesnt look like the outside. However it still takes a lot of work!

GrumpyPanda · 23/02/2025 08:51

I like the Ikea one - very reasonably priced and on the larger side. I find tiny mortars exasperating, they take a lot of force and often still don't get the contents ground down.

soupyspoon · 23/02/2025 08:55

Ive never been successful in keeping the contents inside the bowl, they fly out all over the place

Another vote for LeCreuset. Lovely colour so looks decorative too.

Another vote for the Ikea granite one. And a coffee grinder for spices.

I have an unglazed porcelain one that I've had about 30 years, and use it mainly for grinding coriander for carrot and coriander soup.

It's like these from Milton Brook.

I have the Lakeland granite one and really rate it, DH uses it way more than I do and has never had any complaints!

And I've just got mine out of the cupboard to use and it's not Le Creuset at all! It's a Tala one, like this:
