Dinner party ideas - dairy free

Wooosh · 21/02/2025 19:53

I've got friends coming over next weekend. One can't eat dairy, the other no onion.

Can I have ideas for an easy but not too basic looking main course?

Jus rol is (or certainly used to be) vegan. So anything pastry based. Beef wellington would be my go -to but i make it all the time so it is easy for me.

Or herbed rack of lamb. Or roast chicken marinated in garlic and herbs and olive oil and lemon juice.

Thai curry (green or red) is normally dairy free and onion free. This fish version is my favourite because it's so easy but the flavours are so perfect. realfood.tesco.com/recipes/thai-red-fish-curry.html Serve with Jasmine rice

Chinese cooking is normally totally dairy free and doesn't need onion either.

Just look to Asian food for inspiration as much of it is dariy-free.

Steak, fondant potatoes (flora plant butter), tender stem broccoli.

Thai green curry, rice and poppadoms.

Crispy sesame chicken (think it's a good food recipe), rice and edamame beans (itsu frozen).

Crumble & Alpro custard, Coconut milk chocolate pot or mango sorbet for dessert are all easy to make.

I'd probably do a roast dinner. Oatly barista makes amazing Yorkshire Puddings, it's great in mash with vegan butter too.

KnickerlessParsons · 21/02/2025 20:38

Steak and chips. You can't beat steak and chips!

Psychologymam · 21/02/2025 20:41

Asian is always a good bet as tends to be dairy free naturally. Easy to do a roast dairy free too - just be mindful gravy granules can have dairy in them. Lots of good butter substitutes but no decent cheese subs I feel.

Nigella's chicken, fennel and orange tray bake? I don't eat dairy & tray bakes can be great with strong flavours to replace onion.

Replace any onion with leek.

Wooosh · 22/02/2025 10:43

Thanks so much for all the ideas! I feel much more confident now.

Replace any onion with leek.

Aren't leeks part of the onion family? Or do allergies/intolerances not work like that?

MumJumpers · 22/02/2025 10:48

Just a note if you do go for Thai curry, don't do it with a ready made jar sauce, do it with a paste and coconut milk; the jar sauces don't taste as good and they quite often have dairy in them.
The above mentioned beef wellington would be a safer bet for your onion free guest though in case the Thai curry paste has onions in it. A lot of Asian food has onions in it.

This also sounds perfect.

Salads / Buddha bowls with prawns or other fish or chicken or go vegan
Salmon and sushi rice bowls
Roast chicken with lemons, garlic rosemary, ftabreads, crispy potatoes, green salad
Steak and crispy potatoes
Lamb tagine with prunes, almonds and couscous
Chicken tagine with preserved lemons, olives and couscous

Pudding could be nigella's chocolate olive oil cake which is dairy and gluten free (and very nice and very easy - I make it fairly frequently)

AdaColeman · 22/02/2025 11:00

Poached (or oven baked in foil parcels) salmon fillets with Greek style lemon roast potatoes and mixed green vegetables.
For something a bit fancier, you could do individual salmon en croute with vegan ready made puff pastry.

Or confit of duck legs with orange sauce and mashed potatoes with olive oil, or rack of lamb is always impressive, serve with spring vegetables.

TheSandgroper · 22/02/2025 11:04

Leeks, garlic and onions are all alliums. Ask what her problem is so you know what can be substituted.
