Vegetarian gluten-free friend coming for bbq on Sunday - help me please?

So a friend who is semi-vegetarian (prefers not to eat meat if he can avoid it) and who has just been diagnosed wheat intolerant, is coming for lunch on Sunday.

Had been hoping to do a bbq but doesn't seem very feasible. Would like to eat outside though so things like lentil stews/risottos aren't really suitable either.

Can anyone help me with what on earth to serve?

I have 2 DS to feed too, (3.5 & 15mths) - don't really want to do chili stuff they can't eat.

Thanks

Such a relief to read of someone making a fab effort - my husband's gluten free, although he does eat fish. We had corn cobs, veggie kebabs, he had sardines and the kids and I had veggie sausages this week.

^^ no cous cous makes cooking a blardy nightmare for this family as the children love it!

I second the halloumi cheese kebabs. I often do tuna/ marlin steaks instead of a burger and buy freefrom rolls that he has them on.

I often also do newpotatoes in foil packs, some in olive oil with garlic and rosemary, others with honey and mustard. I give them a quick steam first.

Drinkswise, he'll not be able to drink beer/lager unless it's gluten free. Wine and cider are good though!
Enjoy - you are a special friend to put yourself out.

ooh - lovely prawn/salmon kebabs with cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, red onion and peppers - yum!!

Baked potatoes all crispy from the barbecue, with all sorts of filling - most things are fine - coleslaw, humous, tuna mayo.

Just be careful with any bbq-type sauce you make to put on things - soy sauce is out but you can get tamari sauce which is wheat free and more or less the same thing.

Agree that the only gluten free rolls worth buying are the Proceli ones - they're wonderful and worth the exorbitant price - nothing else g-f is like them on the market.

Slice courgettes in half length ways, stuff with goats cheese and walnuts or whatever you fancy . Put back together and brush with olive oil, wrap in foil and put directly on to bbq coals, should cook in about 20 minutes.

Chickpea/ butter bean/ lentil salad!

You could chop up a load of veggie and sweetcorn in there and mix with a sauce or oilive oil, or could just put some chickpeas in a bowl with finely chopped spinach and some pesto. Yum.

And I'd be very cautious with veggie 'meats' - many of them use wheat protein alongside the soy.

Thanks everyone.

The bbq went well (and it was sweltering).

We had corn on the cob as a starter, then rice salad with apple, sultanas, tomato & cucumber & parsley.

Baked pototoes and lots of veg cut up to put on skewers (aubergine, courgette, pineapple, mushrooms, peppers) and tomato salsa & yoghurt raita as dips.

In the end he ate some meat (I put some out to go on the skewers) ! but was really pleased that he could eat everything else on the table with no worries.

We had way too much food (I did some hard-boiled eggs too in a last minute panic!) and ate left-overs last night and I'm roasting the left-over veg now for a lunch.

Thanks also for the tips about soy sauce and separate butter, I made sure I had some butter but he didn't eat any in the end.

Got lots of ideas now for when my vegetarian friends come round - thanks for inspiring me everyone .
