Silicone baking trays

I've just replaced a lot of my baking trays which were 30 years plus, and the loaf tins I've bought are silicone. Do I need to line or grease them same as metal ones?

I usually grease but not line them.

Hadalifeonce · 16/02/2025 18:02

I have never lined or greased mine.

Hope you've still got some metal trays !

They are wobbly, & I find it easier if they are on something solid.

TinyMouseTheatre · 17/02/2025 07:07

I grease mine.

Is it too late to return them? I can't stand silicone trays and things never seem to go right with them.

I absolutely hated mine and went back to my ancient metal ones. Wobbly and hard to clean. No noticeable benefits that I could see.

Oh, I was persuaded to get them because they'd be easier to clean! I think I'll return them, and get metal ones like I'm used to. Thank you all

Really didn't like them when I used them, made cake taste weird too!

ThejoyofNC · 17/02/2025 08:39

They definitely are easier to clean but they're so wobbly I found I always had to stand them on a metal tray to get them in the oven which stopped the underneath from cooking well.

Rotten yokes, I have tins that are nearer to 40/50 yrs old but all my silicon I gave up on years ago, I only use ones now for making mousses etc for freezing or chocolate biscuit cake, they are handy for that if you make it as you can just peel it off when it's set but they don't hold proper shape though if that matters!

Talking about cleaning them is funny because every one I have has become 'stained' for want of a better word by the fat in things over the years. They are clean when I wash them but put them back in the press for a week and they come out with a sort of white film on them, like the bloom you get on old chocolate! So they have to washed again before I use them, a nuisance but I use the fancy shaped ones so metal isn't an option there.
