What to do with a pre made cheese sauce

Someone bought a ready made cheese pasta sauce. Not sure what I should do with it. The obvious choice would be to cook some pasta with it but seems a bit boring!

Whatever you've got in, cooked and mixed with the sauce. Put in a baking dish.
Top with mashed potatoes and grated cheese. Bake

Eg chicken, mushroom and onions

Leeks and boiled eggs

Bacon and peas

Fish pie mix

Or any combination of the above. Or anything else that feels like it would work

Any vegetable in a cheese sauce, add more cheese as shop bought tend to be bland, bake or use in a spinach/brocolli cheese soup (only need a small amount), use as a lasagne topping or moussaka topping, use mixed with chicken and ham in a chicken and ham pie

Cauliflower cheese on the side of big thick slices of ham, with chips or potatoes.

Fry up some bacon and stir in pasta. Or gnocchi.

Its not dreadful, they're just usually not very flavourful, quite bland

You can fix that easily by putting in more cheese, some nutmeg, some mustard (assuming a cauliflower cheese type meal) or if using for Italian type dishes you could put herbs and garlic with it

If you or anyone in the house takes food to heat up at work I’d boil up 3-4 portions of macaroni and add some frozen peas. Once cooked, cool down and stir the tub of cheese sauce into the pasta. Divide into freezable containers and put in freezer or fridge. So you’d basically have 3-4 ‘sort of’ ready meals. Add some grated cheese or parmesan if you want.

Cheesy veg pie. Heat up the cheese sauce, then tip it into a pie dish and partially defrost a load of frozen peas/beans/sweetcorn/cauliflower/whatever by stirring them through the warn sauce Bung a sheet of ready rolled puff pastry on top and stick it in the oven for half an hour. Boom x

I'm afraid I'd bin it.

Cheese sauce needs flour, butter, cheese, milk and whichever spices/herbs you choose and takes about 5 minutes to make.

Look at the ingredients on your pack and ask why?

Heat it up and pour on veg or fish.

I always find fresh pre-made cheese sauce (the kind by the pasta) to be nice.

When I've bought it (Sainsbury's?) it doesn't contain any ingredients that you wouldn't expect to find in home made cheese sauce.

I really wouldn't make soup with it though - that sounds disgusting.

I wouldnt throw it, theres no need, it only takes a few tinkers with it to flavour it up, the base is already there.

No wonder theres so much food waste in this country if people cant use their imaginations to adapt it to taste.

That's not the reason I suggested binning it - I just try to avoid upf items as far as possible so wouldn't buy this kind of sauce.

The fresh stuff tastes just the same as homemade in my opinion!
I'd do cod fillets with new potatoes and green veg and put the sauce on the cod.

Or macaroni cheese or cauliflower cheese.

If it's the jarred stuff, I've never bought it, but my brother once tipped it on a bowl of leftover Bolognese, microwaved it and used it as a dip for garlic bread. It was very good for a hangover!

It'll probably be fine for what ever you usually need cheese sauce for, just check the seasoning and add more cheese if you want to.
During covid I found Marshalls boxed macaroni cheese kits in the shop and tried it out ( previously tried kraft one and it was ruddy awful) Anyway it was surprisingly good and I've bought it ever since. Nobody has ever suspected as it has the same elbow macaroni which I always use and the sauce is yellow not bright orange. I did grate some extra cheese to add just in case it was rubbish, but didn't need it because it's so good!

Fresh sauces aren't all UPF. There is a difference between processed and ultra-processed. You need to read the actual ingredients on an item. Obvs up to you if you don't like or want to avoid anyway but sweeping statements aren't helpful.
