Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I just ran across it twice in Margaret Atwood, and I've never heard it before. Is it just cubed potatoes and peas stir-fried together, or what?

Okay, but are "peas and chips" on a menu TOGETHER at a restaurant?

Not as a specific dish.
It would be XX served with chips and peas.

In a fish and chip shop they're separate items but people might order 'chips and peas'. Most British people are familiar with chips and peas as a concept. It's my go to chippy order!

Wait - what?
Scampi - which means shrimp - is fish nuggets?

Yeah, bits of langoustine, but breaded like a chicken nugget. Pic.

Yes, chips and peas are on a menu, as the 2 sides that accompany a meal. - ' XXX with chips and peas'

It's not usual in England to have menus like I think you do in the states (based purely on TV and film, I may be mistaken!) where you can chop and change what you get with stuff. We don't do asking to switch sides with things from other meals on the menu, and we don't, generally, have 'pick side dishes from the list' type menus in formal restaurants.

OP there's either a cultural difference here or you're being deliberately obtuse.

In the UK, where Margaret Atwood was talking about, these foods are ubiquitous in casual pubs and cafés. They look like the picture posted above.

Peas & chips are not normally served at a proper restaurant .

They will be available at a cheap café or pub
