firstly where can i get lollipop sticks from or can i use something else instead? a straw wouldn't work would it?

secondly how can i make them with no ice lolly makers? was thinking of using a cup but then how do i get the stick to stay in without falling over?

You could cheat and use those small fromage frais and stick a wooden stick in and freeze

Otherwise I got some ice lolly sticks/covers and tray for freezer in pound shop currently have fresh orange and pineapple juice freezing in them

nappyaddict · 08/05/2008 17:34

our poundshop had run out when i looked yday that's why i need an alternative!!

ds is adamant they must be orange flavoured so fromage frais no good either.

you can do them with a spoon and a yogurt pot if desperate

Nighbynight · 08/05/2008 17:36

we got a very good ice lolly set from IKEA.

nappyaddict · 08/05/2008 17:39

oh that's a good idea - hadn't thought of a spoon. so how do i get the spoon to stay upright in the orange juice?

I don't think you do, I think they come out wonky looking but edible

BabiesEverywhere · 08/05/2008 17:43

If you want the spoon to stand up put a piece of selatape across the the cup. Cut half way into the tape and lodge spoon into the half-cut bit.

Bit too much faff for us to actually do, we just have wonky lollies

nappyaddict · 08/05/2008 17:47

lol i think we will have wonky ones too!! so does anyone know where i can get sticks from?

We use mugs and teaspoons

nappyaddict · 09/05/2008 14:32

apparently instore, woolworths, tesco and the works sometimes have them but they are meant for craft purposes. would they be ok to use in food do you think?

the craft sticks are fine to use for lolly sticks, they are made in the same type factory I think... if you cover the maker/cup with clingfilm and pop a tiny hole in it to put the stick the cling film holds the stick up...

normally we just make orange juice or apple juice to make ice lollies.

nappyaddict · 09/05/2008 15:36

cling film sounds easier than selotape!! will try that.

you can also freeze chocolate milk for choccie lollies or smoothie mix in a carton for fruit lollies.

Flame · 09/05/2008 15:38

When I was a kid we had bag things that your poured the juice into and it turned into ice pops - haven't been able to find them since they were fabulous

nappyaddict · 09/05/2008 18:21

well i made some using a mug but i can't get it out. was i meant to put clingfilm inside the mug before i put the juice in?

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 09/05/2008 18:21

run hot water over outside of mug until it slips out

nappyaddict · 09/05/2008 18:22

thanks. god whoever knew i could be so thick. you'd think making ice lollies would be simple!!

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 09/05/2008 18:24

nah nothing to do with children is ever simple

nappyaddict · 13/05/2008 13:18

i went into a craft shop today and she said they weren't suitable for lollies cos the edges aren't finished as well and are rougher or something.

Lakeland (good old Lakeland) sell 100 lolly sticks for £2.50. here under the lolly maker

If you do see any lolly making moulds (mine were from sainsburys) look for the ones where the plastic lolly mould sits in a separate little tray not like the ones in the link. That way you can remove one or two from the freezer without having to take out 6!!

Oh just found some in IKEA!!

see this

I make little ones using petit-filou where I jam the lolly stick through the still intact lids. I also make smoothie ones (they don't freeze well as they crystalise inside but they are still yummy) and I do apple juice etc

Put your kettle on to boil for about 10 seconds, pour the warm water into a mug, stick your lolly in there and it will release from the mould in about 10 seconds (you can tell I have done this a lot ) no fannying around with waiting for your tap to get hot.
