....EACH!!!

I shop at Morrisons and can usually get a bag of mixed peppers for £1.29. Single peppers were 0.68p.

All peppers are now 0.99p each!! Shocking!!

I didnt buy any. because ds2 loves them.

try frozen peppers- i don't normally buy pre-prepared veg, but they are brilliant. They are already sliced up, and you can chuck a handful into whatever you're cooking. Also no wastage from them hanging round the fridge too long, and no chopping.

or if you have a lidl or aldi they sell huge jars in oil or vinegar and if you are chucking them in chilli or whatever you'd never know the difference. They are about 10 times cheaper cos they are very cheap to begin with and have loads of them in there (and no waste).

butter has become really expensive too

jumpingbeans · 08/05/2008 15:56

Prepare to be stunned, i small punnet of teco finest cherries, wait for it 9.99, i am not kidding

jumpingbeans, cherries are expensive at this time of the year. Wait until July when the British ones are available - they should be cheaper.

Don't forget asparagus is in season now!

My brother once bought cherries out of season several years ago. He found out when he returned home he had spent almost £7 for a small bag. (not quite as bad as jumpingbeans' story!)

He immediately got a bowl and insisted I share them with him so that we could get maximum enjoyment out of his investment. Very generous, and they were yummy.

Even though they are out of season, I don't believe they'd have been selling cherries at £9.99 a punnet a few years ago....
IMO supermarkets are shooting themselves in the foot by allowing prices to go up that much (and yes, I do think they're exploiting the situ - don't believe it is just the higher food prices worldwide.)
I know people (NOT me) who don't even look at the price when they go round the supermarket. One encounter with some ten pound cherries and they'll start thinking someone's ripping them off....

Did you know that green peppers are just underripe red peppers? Put one on a sunny windowsill and it will turn red after a few days (turn it every few days so it goes red all over). It will be a bit wrinkly but don't worry, it will still have a good flavour. And it's cheaper to buy a mixed bag with some green ones in.

PuppyMonkey · 11/05/2008 20:48

I bought a mixed bag of three from Tesco's today for £1.48... but the single ones were indeed all 99p!!

BlueCornflower · 11/05/2008 20:54

Last week in our lovely greengrocer, red peppers were £1.25!!! This week they were back to 99p. The greengrocer said he had bought them at cost price of 99p last week so had to make some profit!

I guess at this time of the year its not surprising that peppers & cherries are expensive . . . I think everything is going to go up though, we live on a farm and the price of barley & all sorts of hard feed has about doubled in the last year, so no surprise that butter, milk, meat etc will have to go up.
I don't see any changes in the short term, world grain stocks are so low, the Australian drought was a big thing last year plus so much land going for biofuels
On the plus side for us a nice wet april and some sunshine now means lots of good grass, so we have milk & cheese coming out of our ears
