Air fryer sweet potatoes - burnt outside and hard inside

New to the air fryer - we tried cooking sweet potatoes wedges this evening. Cooked according to the instructions in the Ninja book - 200 for 15 mins.
They were charred on the outside but hard inside. Had to bin them.
Where did we go wrong?

We've not fared well with broccoli either.
Salmon was lovely though.

Keen not to just use the AF for frozen food.
Also if potatoes have to be soaked and dried etc before hand it'll just be no easier than using the oven.

Just keep playing around with it with cheaper food you can afford to ruin. You’ll get there and when you do, you’ll never look back!

How big were your wedges? Perhaps they need to be a little smaller... failing that I usually chuck in the microwave for five mins then crisp up in the air fryer. Might be worth a go!!

mitogoshigg · 26/01/2025 22:16

They take longer than that, 180 for 35 mins. Same as an oven as that's all an air fryer is

liveforsummer · 26/01/2025 22:43

I'd turn the temp down. I don't cook much at 200 in mine.

littleluncheon · 26/01/2025 22:48

Sounds like you need to cook for longer at a lower temp.
200 is high for an air fryer.

LuxuryWoman2020 · 26/01/2025 22:49

I cook most stuff at 185 and don't ever look up cooking times. You probably cooked them too hot, did you turn them over/ shake?

Airfryers are still new and take a bit of practice tbh, but once you've found the right timing and temperature they're fantastic things.

Beamur · 26/01/2025 22:52

Cut them smaller, lower the temperature and cook for longer

ManchesterPie · 26/01/2025 22:54

As others have said 200 is too hot for an air fryer. I tend not to use above 175 for anything.

Ha! My SP wedges only take 20 min in the actual oven? I don't have an air fryer and this thread is making me think I've made the right decision

Valhalla17 · 26/01/2025 22:56

190 for wedges, 15mins
Baked sweet potato about 30 mins and they need to be pricked with a fork a few times

Decisionsdecisions1 · 27/01/2025 09:31

Thanks all - they were already cut quite small. As another poster said, if I have to cook them for much longer I might as well use the oven!

Going to try to cook normal small new potatoes, sliced, maybe at 180 for 15 mins.

The salmon was lovely though. And we're using less oil in the AF so thats something but I can't see us using it much at weekends. Probably just for fast mid week meals for dd when we're late back from work. And its something dd could learn to use too.

Tbh wasn't my idea to buy one and we were using Xmas present vouchers so didn't cost us much otherwise wouldn't have bothered. I do like that there are less cooking smells though, especially with fish or meat.

I cut mine into wedges/chips and microwave for 5 mins. Then 15-20 mins in the air fryer. For those talking about the length of time, remember you don't preheat an airfryer!
