Ok dh found a maggot in a strawberry just now. It had been in a package that was open in the fridge. Should we clear out other stuff that was uncovered/ exposed in the fridge??

Do maggots spread??? I am totally clueless about maggot movements/ habits!

Any advice welcome.

I had a maggot in my leg about 18mths ago. Luckily, dh didn't throw me out.

I'm sure you don't need to throw anything else out. The magot would probably have been too cold to move. They only spread if you've got an egg laying fly in there(I believe). Your other food will be fine, I'm sure.

My dh's step mum once (tried to) feed me raspberries crawling with maggots. She said they were fine as they had only fed from the raspberry.

[sigh]

maggots are baby flies

you get them where a fly has laid its eggs

one maggot hatches from each egg

they cannot multiply or breed or fly, they can only wriggle around

they don't spread disease - the only risk comes from the feet of the fly who laid the egg.

all that happened was one fly laid one egg in one strawberry several weeks ago, probably in a field in Kenya

bin that one and the rest of the fridge will be fine

no problem - tasty fried

Thanks Mrs Badger - was probably overreacting but it was just so revolting I couldn't bear the thought of it.
