Lovely Mumsnetters who eat lots of tofu - where do u get it from? What's best and why?

You were utterly amazing in giving me so many great tofu recipes which I'm going to start trying this weekend...at the rate of a couple a week which will be great!

Which tofu do you like best? And why?

I guess I'm looking for good nutrition and ideally good calcium, but I don't know how much that varies. I've got some health challenges and think this is going to be one of the things that helps

Huge thanks in advance

The Dragonfly one is good and also Sainsburys organic one

bakewellbride · 22/01/2025 14:30

Aldi 99p tofu is best for tofu scramble as it's so soft and crumbly.

We like The Tofoo Co brand stuff 👌
Their website has easy recipes on, too https://tofoo.co.uk/recipes/

I like the Tofoo Company ones, the smoked one is my particular favourite firm tofu. I've also used the Cauldron Authentic Tofu which was good too.

DH just made his own using nothing but lentils and water. Found a recipe on google. Utterly delicious, even as cold cubes, and completely upf free.

Purpleandgreenyarn · 22/01/2025 14:35

I like Tofoo as well. To be honest as long as you go with an extra firm one and make sure to dry with some kitchen roll before cooking, you can’t go too far wrong.

Lidl have got a decent tofu in at the moment.

The one bought from the Chinese shop are the best ones for me, as they have a better texture inside when I fry the cubes, rather than a grainy one.

However, I mostly use Sainsbury's organic tofu. I have tried Tofoo a couple of times, but we just find it too rough and dry. I don't press my tofu, just pat it with either some kitchen paper or clean tea towel to absorb the excess water before frying.

thank you - great suggestions here and Sainsbury's is my local supermarket so going to start there - and then try others in time!

@Resilience that's impressive - Ill see if DH fancies giving it a go!! He already makes yogurt and kefir so perhaps not too much of a reach...

TofuKing is the best and a lot cheaper than supermarkets.

Go to a Chinese supermarket and it is about £1.80 for 600g.

CrumpledBlouse · 18/08/2025 07:07

The best I found when I lived in the UK was Clean Bean tofu, made on Brick Lane.

RampantIvy · 18/08/2025 07:15

Tofoo here. I don't live near a Sainsbury's or a Chinese supermarket.

DeafLeppard · 18/08/2025 07:52

Cauldron or Aldi here - the Aldi one is firmer.

The stuff you get in Asian supermarkets is best - fresh in the fridge, comes in water like feta. You can get 3 or 4 different levels of firmness. Knocks the socks off Tofoo and the others you can get in normal supermarkets

I think a lot of us recommend brands like Tofoo because we don't live anywhere near an Asian supermarket. It's a 40 minute drive either way for me.

I love the crispy fried tofu you can get there and I stock up whenever I do go, but I just don't have the time to spare a couple of hours (plus, because I love to spend ages browsing) to just buy some tofu.

Oh I know. I use Tofoo and the like as well. Just the fresh stuff has a better texture. We’re lucky in my town as have one of those nice Korean shops but I wouldn’t go there just for tofu!
