Rub it with oil

foofi · 05/05/2008 15:47

Depends what it is made of - not if it's a nonstick sort.

Blandmum · 05/05/2008 15:50

If it is not a non stick, you should rub it with oil, heat it with some more oil. Allow to cool and rub the oil in again

Monkeytrousers · 05/05/2008 15:51

No, not non stick - I did have instructions but they seem tonhave gone. Is it just heat oil then rib it off, them it's ready to cook with? Do that every time?

Don't rub hot oil onto a hot wok with your bare hands. Just ask my husband!

CombustibleLemon · 05/05/2008 15:52

If you google 'wok how to season' you'll get loads of results.

Blandmum · 05/05/2008 15:55

I quote ken Hom

Scrub first to remove any machine oil, this should be the only time you scrub your wok unless you let it rust

Dry and put onto a low heat

add 2 tbs of oil and rub over the inside with kitchen paper
Heat slowly for 10-15 minutes and wipe again with the kitchen paper, which will be blackened

Repeat the process to coating, heating and rubbing until the paper wipes clean.

wash in plain water with no detergent. Dry well before putting it away

oooh I've b een looking into this recently

I've read that you should fry a hunk of lard and garlic chives in it for half an hour, or maybe tofu and spring onions as well but basically what mb said. Just makesure your extractor fan is working

I have a feeling MIL has stashed a well seasoned authentic chinese 40 year old wok somewhere in our garage, I will sniff it out and hope it has had the magic done to it

Oh and I heard it has to be peanut oil too

Monkeytrousers · 05/05/2008 16:27

opps.

I've done it

With olive oil and only once.

It's not a great wok to be honest - i think someone bought it al wilko and then gave it to me as a spare but I had a non-stick until recently.

Stir fry was very tasty though!
