One hot meal your whole family will eat

We have a few, but there are some things that are off limits because of fussiness/dislikes/allergies.

My lot will all eat:

Toad in the hole & veggies
Spag al ragù
Baked salmon, wedges & veggies
Fish n chips
Curry
Potato cakes
Chicken Noodles with soy sauce
Spinach, bacon & tomato pasta

But I can't make lasagne, cottage pie, fish pie, soups etc - well I could but some wouldn't eat which is just annoying.

Just looking for ideas!

Risotto was always a hit here: bung in what you have leftover

chicken kiev
chicken korma
jamie Oliver’s sausage meat pasta
roast
toad in the hole
macaroni cauliflower cheese
thai yellow curry
pizza
fajitas
pulled pork
gsmmon, baby roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese

my own personal speciality - crap en crout (layers of cooked sliced potato, layer of cheese, sprinkled with cooked bacon chopped up, layer of baked beans, layer of grated cheese, all topped with crumpled up shop bought filo, bunged in oven. Voilá)

TBH mine weren’t that fussy. They are grown ups now still my babies and eat Pretty much anything.

Edited

Crâp en croûte...I need to know more

Weird...you must have edited while I was typing! Thanks

I did indeed edit. It’s basically deconstructed jacket potato with cheese and beans. Pastry on top. Never anything left.

I make a tomato sauce with red lentils and random veg thrown in. I then blend and freeze it in individual portions so if someone doesn't like the main meal they can have pasta, with olive oil and a serving of the sauce with whatever veg we are having on the side. I use those ice cube type trays which you get for baby weaning so you can just pop out and defrost a couple of cubes of sauce. If you make a big batch of pasta it keeps in the fridge for a while so you don't have to make fresh every day.

Also, weirdly everyone in my house will eat red lentil marinara.

We also do build your own burritos with prawns, black beans, veggies, rice, salsa etc so people just pick what they want.

Yes it would but I'm fussy (oh the irony - in a good way!) about most supermarket processed stuff (seed oils etc) so I'd probably have to make my own fajitas.

Not a meal OP, but do you allow them to have nutella? Here is a home-made recipe using black beans! Sounds bonkers, but if introduced very slowly over time, they may not notice!

Ingredients (use organic where possible)
Makes 550g
100g hazelnut butter
1x 400g tin of black beans, drained and rinsed
4 tablespoons of cocoa powder
2 tablespoons of butter or coconut oil
4 tablespoons of raw honey
2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
A small pinch of sea salt
Method

  1. Add all the ingredients to a food processor or high-powered blender and pulse to the desired consistency.
  2. Transfer the spread to a sterilised jar and store in the fridge for up to three weeks.
  3. Enjoy!

Charms? What's this!

Galette des Rois, it's a French cake/tart that you have at Epiphany, and they bake porcelain charms into it. If you get a slice with a charm, you are lucky.

Only, who needs charms in a cake, amiright, cake doesn't need to be made more fun/appealing...So I bake them into quiche because quiche is vegetably and therefore my dd is suspicious of it haha

@JC03745 thank you for this! I have made homemade Nutella before because I won't buy it - but it didn't contain beans. I have all these ingredients in my cupboards except the beans so definitely easy and no I definitely wouldn't tell my kids about the beans 🤣

@RobinHeartella ahh a bit like a lucky penny in a Christmas pudding (except that's gross).
Maybe I could put a lucky charm in a lasagne to get them to eat it.

One is veggie, so all the meals everyone eats are veggie:

aubergine and chestnut ragu with pasta. (I don't much like it but everyone else loves it)
stuffed peppers with rice, lentils, nuts, onions, mushrooms and grated cheese on top
spanakopita
gnocchi bake with tomatoes, red peppers, onions, fresh basil, mozarella
pasta pomodoro

Yes exactly like the penny in the pudding! But yeah it doesn't work in something you need to use a lot of knife and fork on, as your knife won't be able to cut easily with it there, and so it'll be hard to fish out. So not sure about lasagne. Quiche is the only thing I've successfully used them for. But they could work in stew too probably.

We just use "the lucky bay leaf" as our stew highlight.

1 vegetarian
1 pescatarian
2 meat eaters

Broccoli and mozzarella pasta
Macaroni cheese
Pizza

That's it but we have a lot of meals where just change a component which is easy enough

Eg

Cooked breakfast with veg alternatives
Sunday roast with a veg alternative for the meat
Spicy tacos with no spice for ds
Tomato and basil pasta with no basil for dh
Baked potatoes with various fillings
Vegetarian mince fajitas but ds just has wraps with veg and cheese

Ophy83 · 14/01/2025 23:42

We just cook one meal and everyone eats it, but some get a more enthusiastic response than others!

They love spag bol, fish pie and lasagne

Double up when making the bolognese and later on in the week add kidney beans and Mexican seasoning to either have as chilli with rice or with fajita wraps/salad/cheese/salsa and sour cream

Quick fish tacos made with scampi

Homemade pizzas- you can buy the dough frozen from waitrose (and probably other supermarkets too) if you don't want to make your own. Or make a big batch and freeze portions for future use. Everyone puts their preferred toppings on.

Pasta: puttanesca, cream/bacon/peas, carbonara, mac&cheese, garlic prawn (chilli optional) etc, blue cheese with crispy parma ham, meatballs and tomato sauce (ds likes to make the meatballs)

Escalope milanese

Slow cooked bbq ribs, corn on the cob, salad/coleslaw, potatoes (wedges or homemade oven chips)

Roast chicken with mashed potato and veg or with couscous and salad

Homemade 'KFC' - chicken thighs marinated in lemon juice/garlic/evoo, coated in breadcrumbs in bread rolls with lettuce and tomatoes
Gumbo - v popular
Jambalaya
Risotto
Homemade cannelloni/lasagne
Seared steak and chicken with bowls of salad/wraps/sour cream/salsa etc
Thai curry with jasmine rice

coxesorangepippin · 17/01/2025 01:27

Chicken fried rice
Sausage, mash, veg
Shepherds pie
Lasagna
Spaghetti bolognaise
