Thicken tinned custard?

Youngheartsalittletogetherness · 07/01/2025 16:08

How do I thicken tinned custard for trifle? Some Google answers were iffy as in adding whole egg some were yolk only which I'd have thought would be better.
All tips welcome 🤗

Possibly heat it up and add some thickening granules but i don't think it's the same as custard you make from scratch as it doesn't solidify the same.

A spoonful of cornflour. Mix it with a spoon of the custard first to avoid lumps, then add it to the rest and heat gently.

Heat and add a little cornflour mixed with some milk.

The Ambrosia luxury one is thicker than standard tinned custard.

Flour of any kind does the same, so if you don't have any cornflour, don't worry about it. Use flour and milk/cold water, mix in a thin paste, and add bit by bit until you get the consistency you want.

I actually used a packet mix for my trifle this year. Much thicker than a can or the Ambrosia luxury one.

Make sure it's chilled from the fridge and it should be ok? That's what I do.

Thanks all for the tips
