Help me find this recipe! Beef crumble?

Help please, I have a memory of a dish an old boyfriend's mother used to make. It was braised steak/beef and topped with what I can only describe as a savoury crumble, possibly with some oats or bran. It was late 80s and delicious so I'd love to recreate it.

Sounds lovely! If someone can find the recipe I'll have a go 😜

@Ilovemyshed corn beef hash maybe ? Loved it and never managed to make it like my mum did.

sounds great, can you make an approximation by doing a good stew and then putting a savoury crumble on top, did it have cheese. In a normal crumble the sugar makes it crispy doesnt it? So perhaps suet and cheese in it?

I bet it's some sort of suet crust. Basically rub flour and suet and salt together and a bit of water to bind it. It's not crumble exactly but it has a much rougher texture than normal pastry and is quite crumbly.

My nana used to do a beef cobbler with oats in the scones - try that?

Purplepeopleeaterz · 01/01/2025 13:34

My mum used to make this back in the 80’s but it was minced beef in a tomato sauce and the crumbly topping which definitely had cheese in it. Will start hunting a recipe now.

My mum used to make something similar with mince on the bottom and a crumble on top. The crumble was butter rubbed into flour with a packet of ready salted crisps crushed and mixed in. The mince had a load of tomato ketchup in it - exotic for 1960’s Scotland!

This looks promising Beef crumble

Ilovemyshed · 01/01/2025 14:29

Thanks, it definitely wasn't a cobbler (scones) or with minced beef, and it definitely wasn't corned beef hash.

I'm going to have to experiment with savoury crumbles and different flours to see if I can recreate it. Maybe wholemeal flour and a mix of suet and butter, plus oat bran and herbs will do it!

I make a chicken, broccoli and blue cheese crumble. I just use butter, grated cheddar, flour and oats in the topping. I’m sure that would do for beef too.

@Ilovemyshed when you find it, or manage to successfully recreate it, could you please return to the thread with the recipe? It sounds vaguely familiar to something my Gran did but both she and mum are long gone.

I'm wondering if the savoury topping was fried breadcrumbs with oats mixed in? Was it a loose top or a solid top that the spoon had to push through?

Will do! I've thought about it for ages as I loved it.

It was loose, just like a sweet crumble rather than a pastry or suet crust.
