'Pimping' a lemon tart

We've unexpected guests coming today - a lovely surprise and absolutely not a problem, we have enough leftovers to offer a decent spread. For dessert, I've a lemon tart someone brought yesterday that didn't get opened. I'd like to add some fruit on the side to 'upgrade' it and also to make it go further, but not sure what

In summer, I'd serve a mix of soft fruits, but strawberries aren't great at this time of year. I'm struggling to think (due to tiredness and entertaining overload!) what would go well? Maybe a blueberry compote or baked/poached stone fruits? I think poached pears probably not the right thing to go with lemon tart? Maybe frozen fruits turned into a coulis? I've ice cream and cream, just want a fruit accompaniment. I have rhubarb in the freezer which would have been perfect, but one guest doesn't like rhubarb (or gooseberries).

Thank you

I’d dust it with icing sugar and add a chocolate tuile or two.

Thanks @Funderthighs, both great ideas.

As per OP, also looking for some sort of fruit dish to serve alongside but struggling with what fruit is good at this time of year that would work well.

If you can get red currants add these and dust with icing sugar. I grow them and do this in the summer. No idea if you can get them in winter.

otherwise any fruit that won’t run into the lemon tart and then a fruit salad on the side. Physalis - the little orange coloured berries with papery leaves are available.

It’s nice with raspberries and/or blueberries.

Fresh figs would work well with a lemon tart, or a tropical fruit salad of mango pineapple papaya grapes etc.
A compote of winter fruits, blackberries & plums would also be good, or if you're using up Christmas supplies, mixed citrus fruits lightly caramelised by warming in a pan with sugar & butter (brandy butter would work here) with pomegranate seeds scattered just before serving.

Thank you all, lots of lovely ideas. I'll see what is available and looks good when I nip to the shops later. Won't have time to go to more than one shop so I have noted several of your suggestions, to give me some options.
Thanks again.

I’d whip up a quick meringue and pile it on top it will make it instantly triple in size and look amazing. Either blow torch the top or bake in hot oven until browned on top a little

@DamnedIfIDoDamnedIfIDont that would be a brilliant idea if we didn't have a meringue hater in the group! Thank you though, definitely a good way of making something go further with another group.

Wow. I am going to copy this. Will add some berries and physalis dipped in toffee.

I would say keep it simple, a frozen fruit coulis and cream would be just right. People are likely to be in the mood for something reasonably light at this point so I wouldn't overdo it. I'd personally love rhubarb! Poached pears I don't think are a great match, the flavour is too sweet and gentle.

CatherinedeBourgh · 27/12/2024 12:13

Frozen berry coulis or fresh raspberries if you can get them.

whatisforteamum · 27/12/2024 12:33

Brulee the top and serve with raspberries or raspberry sorbet

Thanks again for all the suggestions. Tescos large packs of fresh blueberries were on offer, on top of which lots of them were really large and juicy. I cooked some of the smaller ones with a little water, lemon juice and sugar, blitzed and sieved to make a coulis then heated through the larger berries in the sauce.
Bruleeed the tart as per a suggestion above. I put some of the berry mix on each plate, topped with a slice of tart, and a ball of ice cream, with a jug of double cream for anyone who wanted it. Worked well if I say so myself! Have noted other suggestions for future use as I often make lemon tart/similar for guests.
Thanks again

Have nothing to add but to say I'm very impressed with everyone here.

It's as much as I can do to open a packet at the moment! X
