Lobster help

Needlobsterhelp · 19/12/2024 21:26

DH has just picked up two large lobsters from an order from a local fishmonger. They are in a cardboard box.

They are alive. No problems with that but we were expecting cooked lobster - except how do we cook and eat them. We have an outhouse that is freezing and lockable. So he’s put them in there.

We had thought about keeping them until Christmas Eve but apparently need to cook them soon and then freeze. Internet isn’t much help. Vet student DC1 said put them in the freezer first and then boil but they seem huge and scuttling around.

Are we better off taking them out of the box and emptying the bottom of the fridge and putting them in there. Outside is currently 5 degrees. Help!!

Please don’t boil them alive. There is a way of killing ‘kind of’ humanely by severing the spinal cord.

Chilling them is cruel. Please dispatch as soon as possible.

Plenty of advice on the internet, e.g.

Well you definitely can’t keep them alive until Christmas Eve! Chilling them or putting in freezer for about half an hour will send them into a sort of comatose state, which is meant to be less cruel than plunging them straight into boiling water.
You will need a very large pot of boiling water with a lid. Cook one at a time. Bring water back to the boil after you have added lobster, then simmer for about 15 mins. Remove from water - if you’re using them for Christmas I would remove all meat from tail and claws and freeze. I wouldn’t keep cooked lobster for more than two days, personally.
And lucky you - I adore lobster.

Also you can kill them by plunging a knife into spinal cord at the base of the head / but you must cook them straight away after doing this

Needlobsterhelp · 19/12/2024 21:37

Well they have to go into storage tonight whatever so the fridge it is I think

They’ll be fine in the bottom of the fridge for tonight, covered with a damp cloth. They tend to become less lively as the temp drops .
