How many grams of turkey, per person as part of a buffet?

Hosting Boxing Day for a group of 10. How much turkey per person would you allow for? Lots of other things on the table, as part of a buffet rather than a sit down meal.
TIA!

No idea tbh as we dont know if they are 10 rugby players, 10 pensioners or 10 children coming :)

And even knowing age range , also knowing what else is going on the table - again its hard to know

Myself, If I was doing a buffet for 10 adults, I would be doing a whole boned and rolled turkey and at least a 3kg ham, which I would cook the day before and put through my bacon slicer to get lovely even sized slices. Id also have a mountain of pigs in blankets or cocktail sausages

Way I look at it, Id rather have too much then too little because nothing would go to waste , Id use it up in the coming days

mitogoshigg · 18/12/2024 12:37

For 10 I would buy a 6-7kg turkey minimum. No idea on grams per head but 150-200?

mindutopia · 18/12/2024 12:40

No idea about grams, but for 10 people, with lots of other sides and no need for leftovers, I’d do your standard shop bought large turkey. If cost is a concern, you could probably push it and just do a medium.

We are doing a Tesco medium turkey. There are 4 of us, but we eat it again on Boxing Day, so will feed us 8 servings and we will still have some leftover to make soup.

I'd say about 100 to 150 gr of turkey per person for a buffet. That's going by the amount of chicken or turkey in a 100 gr supermarket pack.

coxesorangepippin · 18/12/2024 13:00

God this is a bit granular isn't it? A couple of good slices each??

EdinaMonsoon · 18/12/2024 13:05

Thanks for the replies. 10 adults. Everyone arriving at around 3pm so presume will have done breakfast/brunch at least.

Whole menu is:

Turkey breast joint with sausagemeat/cranberry stuffing
Italian style roast potatoes
Aglio Olio Couscous
roast butternut squash
oven baked feta
red cabbage
balsamic onions
spinach, red onion & tomato salad
carrot, beetroot, mandarin & rocket salad
cheeses, olives, pickles, crackers, grapes etc
variety of crisps, nuts etc

@coxesorangepippin Yes of course I'm thinking of a couple of slices each...just wondering how that translates to a total weight for the whole thing.

Are there any Veggies coming who the butternut squash and feta are aimed at, ie, people who can't eat the turkey? If so, I'd worry less about turkey as folks might be sick of it, and make sure you have enough of the butternut squash to ensure the Veggies get some when the meat eaters "try" it :)

sprigatito · 18/12/2024 13:10

If you "budget" two slices each you'll need to tell people that's the limit, otherwise someone hungry will eat more than two. Sounds a bit dismal to me, Christmas is supposed to be about abundance and generosity. I would just buy a big fat turkey and use the leftovers.

SausageinaBun · 18/12/2024 13:13

Are they not having turkey the day before? I'd say the optimum amount of turkey on boxing day per person is none.

EdinaMonsoon · 18/12/2024 13:18

@SausageinaBun 😆 Yes I checked already as I would usually do ham. But they’re having beef (as are we) so I thought a stuffed turkey joint would be a nice change.

Aren't they having beef because they don't want turkey?

SausageinaBun · 18/12/2024 13:19

Do ham!

That would be my worry as well looking at that menu -its a lovely menu, so nice I wouldn't even touch the turkey tbh. Id be chowing down on the cheese and salads with a bowl of roasties on the side :)

I imagine people choosing beef for Christmas day as we are, do it because they don't like turkey. It's horrible and I would and am doing roast pork gammon and left over Wagyu if there is any. With mash and bubble and squeak if I have miscalculated Christmas day veg. Otherwise whatever is in the fridge or sandwiches

EdinaMonsoon · 18/12/2024 13:21

@sprigatito I agree but I’m a bugger for over-catering usually & I annoy myself with this habit! I’m trying not to end up with tons of leftovers and as the fridge will be at bursting point.

OP posts:
EdinaMonsoon · 18/12/2024 13:25

@Instinct1 No veggies in the group. It’s purely selfish reasons for the veggie dishes - by Boxing Day I’m craving something more sprightly and light after the carb/protein fest of the previous 2 days!

EdinaMonsoon · 18/12/2024 13:26

@Doggymummar Good point but already checked & all turkey fans just doing something different on the big day.

Are you including the bones in the "grammage" or are you buying a boned joint?

So it's the only meat? Sides sound great but the turkey will be the main feature.
I'd say 150-200g if other meats (don't forget it shrinks, so 200g raw isn't the same as 200g bought cooked)
If its the only meat then 250-300. Not counting stuffing.

Onlyvisiting · 18/12/2024 14:00

You could add a tray of pigs in blankets, cooked hot? Would be a cheap meaty bulker

Georgyporky · 18/12/2024 17:11

Just a thought, but would people want turkey again on B.D. ?
They'll possibly have their own leftovers, & be looking forward to something else.
