Any recommendations? He's going in the summer with a friend and they thought that occasionally it might be nice to try their hand at meal prep with local ingredients.

We have the Wagamama cookbook and love it.

Nice idea, but they might be better off just looking up recipes online, esp if they are travelling they won't want extra weight in luggage

I love Japaneasy by Tim Anderson, the title is accurate !
Also available as an e-book.

Where are they staying as Japanese kitchens are (mostly) very small and don't have big hobs or ovens. It's very cheap (especially compared to the uk) to eat out - recently had a waygu steak dinner with starters, main course, desserts and drinks for 3 people for under £50.

In the supermarkets meat is very reasonably priced but fruit is expensive (£10 for a tiny punnet of grapes) although the quality is amazing.

Thank you for recommendations.
Good point about limited cooking facilities.
