21mth old wont eat meat or fish, what can I substitute with?

DD is quite fussy really, eats quite a lot of veg, pasta, mashed potato, bread, fruit etc, but the only meat she will eat is mince and only if it is covered in a sauce so it really goes unnoticed! She used to eat white fish (again only if in a sauce!) but now spits it out saying 'yak'!!! (charming !)
I worry that she is missing out on a food group??? any tips/suggestions on how i can help? she only has her front teeth so it may be that she struggles to chew chicken etc??

Beans?

edam · 30/04/2008 22:28

Cheese, yoghurt and other dairy. Quinoa. Nuts, beans, pulses - make a dhal or veggie stew with lentils.

Would she eat oily fish, btw? Salmon, sardines? Ds used to go for mackerel in tomato sauce on pasta.

llynnnn · 30/04/2008 22:29

what kind of beans tfm?

Mince covered in a tomato sauce ie bolognese is very good for her btw, be glad she eats it!

TillyScoutsmum · 30/04/2008 22:30

lentils ? Dd won't eat meat or fish either. I do a red lentil thingy with veg, potatoes and cheese and she wolfs it down

Cheese and eggs also good for protein

llynnnn · 30/04/2008 22:32

she does eat cheese (if melted on toast/as a sauce!) and loves yoghurt.
will have to try lentils, its not something i eat, but will have to get some and try

DD is a bit fussy, I find she will eat sliced roast Chicken, undyed smoked haddock (a bit salty but ok every now and then) and ham She will eat any roast if we are all eating it but on the average tea time I often just make sure she has protien from eggs or lentils etc.

How old is she? DD is 19m and has been though phases of not liking certain textures etc, I have kept offering until she starts eating it (she was like this with potatoes at first).

one favourite I keep giving her is a pasta suce. Heat 1 tin of chopped tomatoes in a pan, throw in half a bag of spinich (washed) then add 3tbsp of pesto. Simmer it all for a few minutes then blitz and put into little tubs and freeze. It is great on cooked pasta with some grated cheese, lots of iron and vitamin c. I also put some cooked lean mince in every now and then.

ds was v meat/fish averse for a long time, still won't eat it in any plain form
he did however love tofu - even just plain cubes, but also the marinated stuff in with noodles; homemade egg fried rice; eggy bread; baked beans and cheese together form a complete protein

Amapoleon · 30/04/2008 22:44

My ds likes tofu especially Cauldron Marinated.

TillyScoutsmum · 30/04/2008 22:44

Oh - dd will eat sausage meat as well (not actually sausages - don't think she likes the skin)

TheFallenMadonna · 30/04/2008 22:46

Red kidney, borlotti, cannellini.

DD not a big meat fan, but loves beans.
In pasta sauce, chilli, soup...

callmeovercautious · 30/04/2008 22:52

Sorry - I asked how old and it was in your title I was confused by the front teeth thing. DD has all of hers and I assume all others of her age do as well.

I agree with the tofu, a friends DD will eat quorn cubes but no meat. The friend has lost lots of weight as they eat together all the time and so she is being super healthy

Beans - DD will eat baked beans when in the right mood. You can get whole earth ones but I give her reduced sugar and salt ones most of the time as she only eats them maybe every 10 days.

Another trick I am trying is to ask her what she wants, I show her different foods and she picks - not always practical I know - but it seems to help the fussy behaviour. We are also teaching her names of foods when we are out shopping, she learnt aubergine last weekend, not said properly but we know what she means

llynnnn · 01/05/2008 12:20

thanks again for your replies

her teeth are coming slowly but surely, was getting a bit concerned at one bit but can see a couple under her gums now!! still no molars though!
i try to ask dd what she wants sometimes, but she either says yoghurt or spaghetti !! will have to get her more interested in food and 'helping' me prepare it!
will give the sausage meat and tofu (i've never had that)a try too, may be a hit!

Hurrah! Someone else with a child thats eats like mine. My Dd (19m) would only eat mince, and the odd fish pie. Discovered she will eat most things as long as they are covered in sauce that looks red/orange (ie the colour of jar food), so unfortuntly she now has a varied diet of different tomato based sauces over her meat. It works though and she'll eat it.

llynnnn · 02/05/2008 12:08

good to know i'm not the only one! love your name btw!! she also loves any tomato type sauce, but unfortunately mine just sucks the sauce off then spits the meat out!!
