I have a jar of brandy mincemeat which expired in September. Would you use it?

Is it still sealed? Then yes, I would

sbsmiths · 07/12/2024 13:56

Yes it’s sealed. Thank you!

Yes, even if it isn't sealed as it has been preserved like jam. If you avoid getting anything in the jar it will keep years.

I'm sure it will be fine. Mincemeat (the traditional kind, anyway) should have a very high sugar content. Sugar is a preservative. It may not have any genuine alcohol, but if it did, that's a preservative too. Give it a good stir, slosh in some brandy if you have some, and it should be lovely.

MamaWeasel · 07/12/2024 15:44

Hell yes! You'd pay more for it now, it's "mature". 😁

rainbowunicorn · 07/12/2024 16:35

Of course, it will be fine. It won't be an expiry anyway it will be best before. Anything tinned or in a jar will keep indefinitely as long as the tin ir harvest not damaged or the seal broken.

margegunderson · 07/12/2024 22:53

Yes - I've used mincemeat far older than that!

Knittedfairies2 · 07/12/2024 23:17

I'd use it too. There's an article in today's i newspaper about a man who eats one mince pie every Christmas to honour his mum who made them and put them in her freezer. She died in 2002 - and she left 47 mince pies...

Haroldwilson · 08/12/2024 08:32

They're called preserves for a reason.

mitogoshigg · 08/12/2024 08:33

Been known to use it 5 years out of date, should be absolutely fine

Rainbow321 · 08/12/2024 08:35

Yes , but I've eaten Christmas pudding 4 years past its date.
