Never been to Iceland

This is going to sound like an advert. But I promise it's not.

There was a thread a couple of days ago where a lady was talking about cooking Duck for ten. We are having Duck, for two , so I read with interest. Someone mentioned that Iceland had them for £10 so I thought that's a good price, I'll get some and we can practice for Christmas.

Oh my. I had never been and the range of stuff they have is incredible! I had to get some Greggs steak bakes and Christmas bakes, of course. Joints of meat the perfect size for us with left overs. Party food, slimming world ready meals, my protein which is great for me being on Mounjaro. Fancy desserts, charcuterie platters, hors douvres everything you could want good brands too.

They didn't have the ducks, that's big stores only apparently but when I have room in the freezer I'm gonna be stocking up with a delivery from there. Pleasantly surprised, I was also the only customer which was really nice.

Surely what they sell is mostly UPF

It sells a lot of frozen veg and fish/seafood. Not processed. Just prepped and frozen at sea so really fresh.

Cheap doesn’t equal good food. Most of the offerings are horrendously ultra processed and bad for you

You can shop there cleverly though and avoid it
I go for frozen mash, steam bags of rice, frozen veg etc

Yes indeed
Most supermarkets are majority upf rather than whole foods.

Inspired by this thread I had a look on Iceland's website to see where local stores are - and ended up down the wormhole that's the 'Our Story' section, a decade by decade, blow by blow account of the company's history and ups and downs...(sorry off topic).

It's all a load of muck. Lol. I started using it for fish at one point, but the quality was dire. I'm never going there again. You have to spend so much to get free delivery. Like how much frozen junk could one family need in a month?
My mate loves it though. Says it's 'convenient'. But frozen foods from other retailers are better value and quality.

Not if you buy the frozen unprocessed food there. My usual supermarkets are a combination of Sainsbury's and Waitrose, but I go to Iceland for bags of frozen spinach & broccoli, which I eat as if they're going out of fashion, and I find to be better quality than Sainsbury's or fresh from Waitrose. There are also bags of frozen mango junks, frozen raspberries & blueberries & hulled strawberries. All fantastic for going into Greek yoghurt & then my Ninja Creami for ice cream for a quarter of the calories. Or for frozen cocktails ...

Their fresh vegetables are no worse than other supermarkets, and some of the frozen fish products are fine: the tuna steaks, fish pie mix, and mixed cooked shellfish especially.

If you just avoid the processed stuff Iceland can be a healthy place to shop. But yes, there is a lot of processed food & I can see why about 25% of Britons are obese ...

And weren't they the first supermarket to ditch palm oil in own brand products?

Anyone remember their orangutan advert that was banned a few years back or am I misremembering?

Needmorelego · 08/12/2024 16:14

@wwyd2021medicine yes they made a big thing about palm oil.
Their own brand beef products were pretty much the only major supermarket that weren't affected by the horse meat scandal a few years ago.
People are very snobby about Iceland - yet the ones the most snobby never actually go in there and just believe myths about them.
Probably the same people that seem to be under a strange belief that Poundland only sells out of date products (I know a few people that believed this 🤷).
