My son loves Korean food and I want to get him Korean cooking equipment ( not ingredients) what would you recommend. He is a competent cook.

I don't really use anything specific when I make korean food, I need a sharp knife for slicing rib eye steak really thin ( for bulgogi), a glass tupper wear dish for marinating the beef, a good griddle pan and something to mince garlic and ginger with. I do like little pots to put a dipping sauce in for korean dumplings.

Kimchi box if he makes his own kimchi

So really a good present would be a very good knife and a proper cast iron pan.

I'd probably buy a good Korean cook book too and a selection of ingredients e.g soy sauce (a big one), seasme oil, korean red spice paste etc. When I male bulgogi I freeze the beef steak so I can slice it more thinly whilst frozen hence the really sharp knife - it then defrost overnight in the marinade. The kimchi pot is a good idea too. I use a cast iron griddle or a wok to fry it

I would love some sort of hot pot cooker. If he likes hot pots.

An electric rice cooker.

A Korean friend of mine told me that many/most Korean households have one, in the same way that most UK households have a kettle.

Traditionally, Koreans eat many different kinds of rice: www.mandu.market/blogs/korean-food-cuisine/a-complete-guide-to-rice-in-korea-history-culture-and-cuisine

The website ‘sous chef’ (which i read about here) has a very reasonably priced Korean starter kit which looks great.

Otherwise I’d go with bell jars or a proper box for making kimchi, gochugang, rice noodles etc with nice chopsticks and maybe a recipe for bibimbap/beef bulgogi.

Cool present!
