Do people really spend more than a fiver on feeding the family on an average day...?

I'm just surprised that Sainsburys are making such a big deal about this in their current ad campaign as I only ever spend more for a special occasion (& I don't menu plan!). Am I just tight-fisted?

We easily spend more than a fiver a day feeding a family of five. How do you do it?

oiFoiF · 29/04/2008 14:11

i spend more than a fiver over the course of the day yes

Iota · 29/04/2008 14:11

it sdepends on the meat IME :-

mince = under a fiver
steak or chicken breasts = over a fiver

wannaBe · 29/04/2008 14:12

good god yes. easier to do if you're vegy, but if you eat meat then it really isn't that easy.

MrsMattie · 29/04/2008 14:12

I'm afraid we probably spend more than a fiver a day on food.

Hecate · 29/04/2008 14:13

No, it's not even a fiver for meals for one day though is it? It's one meal. Ok, the main meal, but still - £35 a week on 1 meal a day - on top of which there's breakfast and lunch and snacks and fruit and puddings and ....

morningpaper · 29/04/2008 14:13

I spend MUCH more than a five I would imagine

Yes mince is cheap but you don't just sit and eat mince, you add squillions of other things

Blardy baby sweetcorn that the children are currently OBSESSED by is costing me about a fiver a day... shipped by bloody private jet too I expect

Iklboo · 29/04/2008 14:13

Depends how you break it down. We but chicken breasts in bulk so they'd be able to come in at under £5 and we buy fruit/veg etc from local market so that works out cheaper than supermarket

oiFoiF · 29/04/2008 14:13

buy frozen baby sweetcorn.....

Frizbe · 29/04/2008 14:14

Yep we do, family of 5.

WillyWonka · 29/04/2008 14:14

Sorry, should have clarified - the £5 is for your main meal only, not breakfast, lunch, tea & snacks, because then I'd understand!

Yes. I should think so. Perhaps not every day but certainly on the weekends if we have a roast joint or something of that sort. And over the course of a day more like £10-15 I should think. There are five of us and DH and eldest DS#1 eat a lot.

Hathor · 29/04/2008 14:16

Of course. £5 a day is £1.67 per meal for the whole family.

Probably spend more than that on breakfast (krispies, milk, toast, etc.)

Do they mean £5 for 1 meal?

More than £5 a day yes, but rarely £5 per meal. I do a roast at the weekend, so that is considerably more than £5, but then use left overs for Sheperd's pies or similar and rest of the week it will be meals that make a little meat or fish go a long way. Also have at least one meal a week of eggs, rather than meat.

micci25 · 29/04/2008 14:17

yes i often spend over a fiver on a meal for two! but having said that its usually when im making something that requires spices that we dont have and i have decided what we are having for tea after tyhe butchers has closed!

i find supermarkets really expensive for meat

Hathor · 29/04/2008 14:17

Then might just be possible for 1 meal - main course, no pudding. (not that we usually do pudding)

ComeOVeneer · 29/04/2008 14:17

Dh spends more than a fiver on his lunch! I'd say on average we probably spend about £8 feeding 4 of us for our main evening meal

Dropdeadfred · 29/04/2008 14:18

i spend more than £5 on myseld and Dp's main meal...so for all 5 of us we would never eat just £5 of stuff

OverMyDeadBody · 29/04/2008 14:18

It's just DS and I and I never spend as much as a fiver on just one meal!

Since the landlord put the rent up a few months ago I've only got £30 a week for food. So yes, it's under a fiver a day.

I've cut out breakfast for me though and switched DS from shreddies to porridge made with value oats.

expatinscotland · 29/04/2008 14:19

what are you feeding them, Willy?

what's your secret? mashed neep and tattie with butter and a plate of broth?

skirlie?

yes, we spend over a fiver a day, but no meal is over a fiver, no.

Dropdeadfred · 29/04/2008 14:20

For instnance we have kingprawn stirfry regularly and the prawns are £8 without the noodles, beansprouts, veg, sauce etc

mankymummy · 29/04/2008 14:20

none of Jamies recipes include things like oil, herbs, stock cubes. in the meatballs and chilli there are no peppers, mushrooms, fresh chilli etc.

i think you could easily feed your family for 5 pounds per meal but it would be a bit boring !

Jas · 29/04/2008 14:21

For a main meal....maybe once or twice a week, I spend more than £5 on the main meal for 5 of us.

TheBlonde · 29/04/2008 14:22

I spend loads more than 5 quid
ought to cut back really
