Hubby wants mince and onion pie and I have never made it before.

I have organic lamb mince, onions and pastry.

I was thinking I would brown off the mince as if I was doing spag bol or shepherds pie, fry some onions and then put them in the dish with the pastry on top and bottom. Oven for 25-30 minutes.

Does that sound about right? TIA.

Yes. I'd add a dash of worcester sauce as well

When browning the meat?

Yes.

Oh I think I'd add a teeny bit of stock or water as well

the bbc web page has loads of recipes on my sis makes a lush mince from one of the old be ro books if you have any lying around?

StrangeTown · 29/04/2008 14:08

I cook my mince off completely with onion, worcester and bit of stock for about 20 mins. Then thicken it slightly with cornflour/bisto to make gravy. Needs to only have a bit of gravy and to be quite thick. If you are going to have top and bottom for pastry is is worth baking the base blind first.

OverMyDeadBody · 29/04/2008 14:12

make the base like you would for a shepherd's pie, as StrangeTown said, with stock and flour so there is some sauce. Otherwise it will be very dry and pastry needs a sauce I find.

NotABanana · 29/04/2008 14:27

Good point about thickening up, thanks. I would have forgotten that.

Never baked anything blind before. How long for please?

I would put it in to bake blind for about 10 mins with the beans in and then take them out and put back in the oven for another 5 mins, just so the pastry is colouring.

NotABanana · 29/04/2008 14:32

Thank you.

I finally use the beans I have had in my cupboard for years!!

All made fine and all eaten.

Thanks for all your help.

Everyone loved it except DD (no surprise there really) and Dh and DS1 definitely want it again.
