Do you think I could make a cake that looked like an Oscar award?

It is my niece's 21st, she is at drama school

I have to make the cake and I was thinking of making one in the shape of an oscar but need some helpful ideas
So far I have come up with

Making a load of cakes and cutting out shapes and stacking them and carving a bit to make shape of oscar and base

Sticking a big wooden skewer down the middle so it all held together

What should I ice it in? I think I can paint gold lustre dust on it to be properly gold. Or there are various edible gold sprays here

I know that fondant icing will be a nightmare and crack. Presumably I can patch it up and smooth it over with a pallette knife or something? And the gold spray should cover it?

Any help from experts gratefully received

No way an expert, but couldn't you perhaps start with a swiss roll and stick bits on and cut bits out?

Probably one of the weirder replies I've ever given....

You need Slubberdegullion

have you asked that cake shop in Richmond CD? They have loads of moulds there and may have some ideas...(cannot remember the name of the shop, it's a cake decorating shop...THINK it's on the same street as Argos but not 100% sure)

Would be easier to do it lying flat rather than 3d. See picture on my profile

I wouldn't have the confidence and I think it's a great idea.
I just googled gold oscar cakes in images and there are a few images there for inspiration. Including this one "Cake pictureblog.pinkcakebox.com/sweet-16-oscar-cake-2007-08-11.htm"
If I was doing it, I would track down an fake oscar statue, (must be some on ebay or a cake decorating site or something) and do a film reel base or something like there is in that link.
Good luck
Want to see it.

Or Jane Asher does a service where you can get a photo put onto an edible transfer and then you apply it to your cake. You could photoshop a pic of your niece receiving an Oscar from George Clooney or similar...

Great idea though - but I would def lie it flat if you are going to do full Oscar statuette.

If you make a full 3d statue you are going to have to put dowels in for support. I would go for either a lying down version, or decorate a cake with bands of fondat to look like film real and model a small statue out of either fondant or marzipan, sprayed gold to put on top of the cake.

CountessDracula · 29/04/2008 14:16

yy I know I would have to put dowl in (that was my skewer lol!)

I really did want to try and do a 3d one

But if the pros wouldn't attempt it then I'm not sure I should...

What would I ice it in if I did though?

I like the film reel idea

If you make your own fandant it is a lot more supple so you could cover it with that, or make faux fondant with buttercream.

fondant
