Recommend me a good set of knives/knife block, not keen on serrated edges, around £50, neat and tidy look

I prefer smooth edges, I only like a serrated edge for tomatoes really.

We have knives but OH puts them in the dishwasher and has ruined them, horribly blunt and therefore dangerous

These new knives are for me only, he wont be allowed to touch them.

I dont want some ugly massive block either, something neat and tidy, easy on the eye if possible

All knives need maintenance. You could buy the most expensive chef's knives on the market and they will still dull over time from use.

We have a knife sharpening block set and DP sharpens them about once per year, although they could do with doing a bit more often.

We have a knife sharpener but, once they've been ruined in the dishwasher I believe theres no way back for them, plus they werent exactly good knives to start with

Also, unless you're an expert, which Im not, when you sharpen with a bog standard sharpener thing, you can ruin them even more

I disagree. We have stones of various grits and it's actually straightforward, there are tutorials online, videos etc. you start with the highest and work your way down, all with running water, and finish off with the leather strap to get rid of any residual metal threads.

Anyway, would you consider buying knives separately (so just the ones you want) and putting up a magnetic rack?

I like the ones that are all one piece of stainless steel from John Lewis.

I dont really want a magnetic strip, we would have to drill into tiles and I dont want to do that

I also probably wouldnt have the cognitive functioning to be honest to work my way through doing all that with a knife to sharpen it

Perhaps my best bet is to just buy new knives regularly!

A good butcher should be able to sharpen your knives for you if you don't want to do them yourself
