Champagne for someone who is into Prosecco

My mate at work is taking early retirement and I’ve collected more than enough money for a bottle of champagne, but not sure what to get as I rarely drink it. Can anyone recommend a brand/ champagne house? I think , given that she usually goes for Prosecco, it shouldn’t be “ austere” and on the easy drinking side. Thanks for any recommendations.

Pink champagnes are usually sweeter you could look at those? I’ve had and enjoyed the Moët rosé before

Singleandproud · 21/11/2024 07:54

Just buy her what she likes and another gift to go with it. Why risk buying something expensive she may not drink?

drwitch · 21/11/2024 07:55

If she prefers prosecco why buy her champagne -perhaps a set of nice glasses to drink prosecco from instead

Fraaahnces · 21/11/2024 07:56

Why not two bottles of Prosecco? Or Prosecco and some cheese and crackers?

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 21/11/2024 08:01

I’d go for Champagne - special drink for a special occasion. She probably usually has Prosecco for price reasons!

Do you have access to somewhere other than a supermarket?

Avoid anything that has ‘extra brut’ on the label. If possible, go for a ‘Demi-sec’ but if it says ‘extra dry’ or ‘dry’ it will actually have a fair bit of sweetness, so should be good for a Prosecco drinker.

Thanks guys, this is definitely a champagne occasion. Good call re Rose and @ downthepub I’m going to assume you know what you are talking about! Thanks for steer away from extra brut. Any more recommendations welcome!

I love Prosecco but really don't like champagne at all. Gives me an instant headache.

Is there a way you can subtly find out whether she actually likes it?

Chersfrozenface · 21/11/2024 13:44

I really like Veuve Clicquot - can"t afford to drink except once in a blue moon, mind.

Anyway, the firm now has something called Veuve Clicquot RICH, which it describes as "an easy-to-drink champagne". That might fit the bill.

MinnieMountain · 21/11/2024 13:48

How much do you want to spend?

Verite1 · 21/11/2024 14:03

Veuve Cliquot (around £48) and Tattinger (£43) are both very easy drinking and look special. Sometimes you can find Tattinger with 25% off but hardly ever (never?) Veuve. Let me know if you would prefer cheaper and I can recommend others which are not too dry. Personally I am not such a fan of rose, but if you are going to get it, Tattinger Rose is the nicest IMO. I don't like Moet at all and I know others feel the same so I wouldn't get that.

Verite1 · 21/11/2024 14:05

I wouldn't get Demi-Sec - it will be too sweet even for Prosecco loves. Get a normal brut champagne, but just one that is not too dry.

Verite1 · 21/11/2024 14:07

But as others have said, another possibility is a decent bottle of Prosecco (or alternatively cremant - which is basically champagne but not from the champagne region in France) and some beautiful art deco coupe champagne glasses. Then she will have something to remember you all by.

MinnieMountain · 21/11/2024 14:12

My favourite is Gosset. It comes in a slightly unusual bottle too.

sansou · 21/11/2024 15:14

Asda has 25% off if you buy 6 bottles. They have Taittinger for £33 or Under £25 if you stock up for Xmas/NY/special occasion.

I like champagne Prosecco and any sparkling - k agree veuve cliquot is a solid choice, rose is good and so is pool roger - don't worry too much I bet she'll be thrilled, I know I would be!

sansou · 21/11/2024 15:25

My personal favourite is Veuve Clicquot because I like its buttery taste (my non expert description). I normally stock up when Sainsburys has its 25% off 6 bottles which it does every Sept/Oct. We had some for my son's 21st and will have some on Christmas Day/NYE.

notatinydancer · 21/11/2024 15:27

Taittinger is lovely.
There should be should be gift sets around now.

Viewfrommyhouse · 21/11/2024 15:28

As a Cava by choice drinker, I'd much rather a bottle of Cava than champagne.
However, Veuve Clicquot would be an acceptable substitute.

TheGander · 21/11/2024 18:25

Thanks everyone. The budget would actually run to a bottle of each, maybe it would be fun to do that, she could do a blind tasting! The idea of pretty glasses is lovely, but I don’t have a car and will be carrying everything in to work in my bike, plus I’m sure she’ll already have fluted glasses. I think I’ll look around my local sainsburys and see if anything is on offer, and avoid the extra Brut or Demi sec.

Pink Tattinger is my favourite.

Ilovemyshed · 21/11/2024 18:36

Depends how much you have. Laurent Perrier Rose is always a decent option as is Billecart Salmon.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 21/11/2024 18:51

I mostly prefer Prosecco to champagne and I would buy veuve cliquot or lanson black label.

GratitudeGoddess · 21/11/2024 19:10

I love prosecco and my go to Champagne is Bollinger or Billicart Salmon-Rose
