Hello everyone 👋
what’s everyone making Xmas day? I usually do pastries etc for breakfast and 3 courses.

Crimblecrumble5 · 10/11/2024 16:13

I've been thinking about my Christmas Day menu today.
Breakfast probably croissants and chocolate from stockings.
Lunch will be a small bronze turkey or large, posh chicken with gravy, bread sauce, chestnut stuffing, bacon lattice, sausage meat, PiBs, goose fat roast potatoes, honey roast parsnips, sprouts, carrots and broccoli. Christmas pudding with rum sauce and/or cream.
Later on cheese board and/or fat sandwiches stuffed with leftovers from lunch, whatever people fancy.
There will also be dishes of nuts, chocolates and treeslets plus mince pies and Christmas cake if anyone can fit anything else in.

We're out on boxing day but the 27th will be leftovers of all the above with no cooking or effort required. Best day of the holiday!

MinnieMountain · 10/11/2024 16:25

Frozen pastries and pork pie, beer and pickles for breakfast.

Starters- smoked salmon and pate.

Lunch- chicken, game roulade, roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, red cabbage, sprouts, glazed carrots, parsnips and bread sauce. Christmas pudding (MIL makes a lighter one with added carrot) with custard or brandy butter and raspberry sorbet.

We have Christmas cake, cheese and mince pies on Christmas Eve.

GetOffTheCounter · 10/11/2024 16:37

Breakfast- smoked salmon and scrambled eggs
Lunch- Cold ham and pickles, smoked chicken, proper potato salad, peas with butter and mint, asian coleslaw, devilled eggs with caviar and Christmas pudding icecream (in Australia this year).

Usually we do a large roast chicken that has been marinated in orange juice, honey and cinnamon; roast potatoes, leeks in cheese sauce, peas, cranberry sauce and buttered carrots plus Christmas pudding.

Sounds absolutely fantastic! What is a bacon lattice I haven’t heard of that one before

How amazing spending Xmas in Oz, is it strange being in a warmer climate that time of year? what is your potato salad recipe please?

I have no idea this year who will come or what we are doing? Its likely just DH and myself, possibly a friend will come or FIL, but don't know as yet. I like to prep as much as I can beforehand and we rarely have a 'traditional British Christmas meal with a Turkey'. I'm not British, but grew up in a hot country and we aren't that keen on Turkey. Some meals we've had from other years have been:
Entree:
-Smoked salmon terrine. Either individual for an entree or as a larger one served as a dip. https://www.deliciousmagazine.co.uk/recipes/individual-smoked-salmon-terrines-for-christmas/
-https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/chicken-liver-parfait
-Prawns in garlic butter and paprika
-Prawn cocktails

Mains:
-Rib roast
-Roast duck
-Capon

Dessert:
-Traditional pavlova
-Layered hazelnut/strawberry/choc meringue tortehttps://www.waitrose.com/ecom/recipe/strawberry-hazelnut-meringue-cake?srsltid=AfmBOoqXtFgVqc-5HENdGoHy9E59p5ZWUl3fiAAWIf3ian_LiJAq2Oms
-Bread pudding made with panettone
-My aunt abroad, used to make a pudding in a bag which was boiled for hours, so sometimes I made a smaller one.

Breakfast, we're having tea/coffee/fruit juice, sourdough toast with nice butter and marmalade and the kids will have those mini box cereals, plus some ready bake pastries.

Lunch - roast turkey, honey roast parsnips and carrots, sage, onion and sausage meat stuffing, pigs in blankets, brussel sprouts sautéed with leek and pancetta, peas, gravy, bread sauce, cranberry sauce and yorkshires for the kids

Later - cold cuts (turkey and ham), cheese, pickles, chutneys, crackers and other picky bits/ leftovers. Chocolate and booze.

Minihero · 10/11/2024 20:13

Oh and red cabbage with lunch! For dessert after the roast we'll have a choice of mince pies, chocolate log or cake or almond and cherry tart - all with cream, ice cream or custard.

I see it as a way of adding in extra bacon to the meal in a fancy way 😄I do streaky bacon, woven into a lattice (literally 7 pieces right to left, 7 pieces top to bottom, under, over, under, over etc) and cooked on top of the turkey/chicken.😋It also helps to keep the breast moist and crisps up the bacon nicely. Once it's done I remove it to allow the bird to brown.

Sounds lovely I think I may try that this year. Thank you x

Just DH, infant DD and myself for Christmas this year.

We're most likely having a roast duck with a port or red wine gravy, red cabbage, sprouts with bacon and chestnuts, cranberry and chestnut sausagemeat stuffing, pigs in blankets and some roasted root veg (parnips, celeriac and potatoes).

Normally we'd have goose, but it's a big bird for 2.

Our Christmas Day menu never changes.

Breakfast is usually spread over a few hours - kids have coco pops that Santa brings, cinnamon rolls, might do sausages and toast or similar, and obviously gallons of tea/coffee to sustain through getting up super early.

When guests arrive, at about 2-3pm, we have blinis/brown bread with smoked salmon and champagne

Dinner - turkey and ham, stuffing, roast and mashed potatoes, roast parsnips, mashed carrots and parsnips, red cabbage, sprouts with pancetta , gravy and cranberry sauce.

Dessert - trifle, lemon tart, Christmas pudding.

supper- leftovers sandwiches on fresh white bread for anyone who can fit one in 😆

I'm from Australia so that is my normal growing up. I did not have a cold Christmas until I was 27! But I have not been in Australia for Christmas for now 25 years so it will be nice. I am hoping we will have a BBQ on the beach on Boxig day. Smile

My potato salad is really one of two recipes. Either Salat Olivier which is my favourite but quite hard to make without it going into mush (link below) or a regular potato salad but I add dijon mustard, sweet paprika, diced dill cucumbers and diced hard boiled egg and top with either loads of spring onion or dill. I have alot of paprika in it so it looks vaguely pinkish.

You’re having my dream dinner 🙂

We used to have duck for Christmas dinner and it’s awesome-also with gravy from red currant/cranberry jelly and red wine.

We ate the duck and all the trimmings on boxing day, 27th was a hearty soup on duck carcass with noodles. 28th we were moving onto something else unlike the rest of extended family still staring at their turkey 😂

Duck is fantastic. Tasty and doesn’t cost a bomb.

RabbitsRock · 11/11/2024 18:16

Breakfast - we all have different but mine is always toasted bagels with smoked salmon & cream cheese. Recently discovered that Lidl are doing smoked salmon with Bucks Fizz. Aldi used to do that & it was to die for but it’s not in atm & may not be stocked again.
Christmas lunch - no starters usually.
Norfolk Bronze turkey ready stuffed ( DH nabbed the last one in Asda last year at an eye watering price but it was absolutely delicious) with foot long pigs in blankets, roast potatoes, honey roast carrots/parsnips, sprouts, peas, homemade bread sauce, turkey gravy & cranberry sauce.
Christmas pud & custard later on.
Tea - leftovers sandwiches with cold roasties (DH will have cheeseboard & crackers)
We have chocolate coins, boxed chocolates, biscuits etc around & sometimes a small Christmas cake.

RabbitsRock · 11/11/2024 18:19

Getoffthecounter your Salat Olivier has taken me right back - my lovely maternal Grandma used to make it for “ High Tea”. I’ve only ever had it at her house.

GetOffTheCounter · 11/11/2024 19:21

It's gorgeous isn't it! My dad's grandparents were from Odessa and I was brought up with Salat Olivier, sometimes with pickled herring in it. I can never get it quite right when I try and make it. But that, on dark rye bread with a shot of vodka is a dream snack.

TangerinePlate · 11/11/2024 23:11

@GetOffTheCounter we have it in Poland as well! It’s vegetable salad though and is served on Christmas Eve,last day of Lent.

I make it here as well and share with my friends. I took it once to the party where there was a buffet, everybody was asking what it was 🙂
