Am I mad or just a lovely mummy?

I have decided t make dd's 2nd birthday cake, I made her 1st b-day cake didn't try to make it look really neat and professional.

This tome round I want to try and make proper iced cake (ready to roll type of icing) Now here comes the tricky bit I want to make it a stacked cake with 3 tiers and each tier will be a different colour. I know I need to bye dowels and put the cakes on thin boards etc, but is at easy as it sounds?

Please help as I'm going to make it Peppa Pig themed and dd would love it.

That is essentially it.

But, yes, you are quite mad.

pinkbubble · 26/04/2008 22:37

Not that hard, in fact i would go as far as it can be FUN to do, good luck

Oh and remember to take lots of pictures.

DD had a new friend round a couple of weeks back and we got talking about what nurseries they went to. DD said she went to so and so, New Friend said "oh I went there!" Then to my amazement she said, "I remember a she had a cake with a Barbie sticking out of it" I was completely flabberghasted as this was over 5 yrs ago - they were 3, she had remembered, I showed her the photos and she said "yes thats right!" Sounds so strange that they went to the same Nursery and never realised - they met this time through dance

So please if you have the time go for it!

Nutter!

maidamess · 26/04/2008 22:59

I have NEVER made a cake for any of my kids birthdays...does that make me terrible? I just think its a lot of faff, they are too young to appreciate it. Isn't it just to impress the other adults? Your dd is only 2!! You could cut out a picture of Peppa Pig and stick it on a malt loaf, she'd still love it!

(Sorry, I'm in an antagonistic mood tonight!)

I still have really fond memories of my birthday cakes when I was a child - they were always two battenburgs stuck together with icing. My mum winces when I remind her, but I GENUINELY thought they were great.

Do it if it makes you happy, but not because you have to to be a good mummy.

Oh and I just thought I'd mention that I am not making any of the decorations, I am using her peppa pig fugures and and buying some ready made flowers etc. The reason I make her cakes and everyone elses is that I find shop bought cakes too dry, I make mine out of chiffon cake so really light and fluffy. Maybe not this one though.

Take a look at my previous efforts on my profile. Not all bad but all tasty. Fancy some cake now.

hi chipo, i used to be a pastry chef, so pls pm me if you need any advice.

I agree, kids birthday cakes - indeed any birthday cakes - don't have to look perfect!

Are you planning to stack the cakes on 3 separate cake boards with pillars in between, or all 3 stacked on top of each other? Either way, I don't know if your chiffon cake will hold up to the weight. Ideally madiera cake would be used, simply because it is more dense and "solid", and will take the weight on top of it....I know the cake doesn't need to look pefect, but you don't want it all sinking to one side or something!

If it's for kids, I think the cutest, and really contemporay way to do the cake would be to make individual cupcakes, pipe on some lovely bright pink buttercream, and top each one with the Peppa Pig cupcake toppers available cheaply on Ebay (and, these can also double up as party fovours to send home)

You could display them on a multi-tiered stand made with different sized cake boards and wedding pillars (again, cheap on ebay!)

You could also make your chiffon cake as a small 6 inch-ish size for the top layer, and put the birthday candles/flowers/peppa figuerines on this, and have this layer as the one your child slices.

ps. your cakes look FAB, I could eat some cake now too...well, i could eat cake anytime

Thanks garciasangria, I was actually thinking that the chiffon cake wouldn't do, so have been looking at recipes for madeira and victoria sponge. Never made or eaten either so not sure what the difference is.

with chiffon cake do you have to use a tin with a hole in the middle or can you use a normal one?

chipo · 01/05/2008 19:19

I have always used a normal tin and they come out fine.
