Dairy free fish pie recipe ideas?

I have some fish pie mix in the freezer. I usually make a bog standard creamy fish pie but I'm reacting really badly to dairy at the moment. But I fancy fish and mash for dinner tomorrow, lovely comfort food. Can anyone recommend a dairy free fish pie recipe? I do have some oat milk but don't really like the idea of making a white sauce with it. Maybe a tomato based sauce?

I think that using oat milk for the sauce would work very well, and give a nice creamy sauce. Or you could use half oat milk and half vegetable or fish stock. Using all vegetable or fish stock would also work well. If you've got some cornflour you could use that instead of making a more traditional roux with plain flour.
If you usually poach the fish first, use the poaching water for the sauce. I'd increase the herbs in the sauce in case the oat milk was slightly sweeter than normal milk.

I came here to say pretty much exactly this. Almond or cashew milk might work better, taste-wise. Thicken sauce with cornflour. Mash with a bit of stock or vegan milk.

Great ideas! Thank you so much. Fish pie for dinner it is.

I also make vegan cheese sauce as I'd make regular, but using oat milk, vegan butter and vegan cheese. Works fine!

I do this with soya milk all the time. It's just as lush.

I make a 'white' sauce the same but use a light chicken stock instead of milk as one child doesn't tolerate dairy. In which case it would veloute sauce. You could use chicken or fish stock.

I did! Thank you all for your replies. I made fish stock with a Knorr stock cube which I poached the fish in and then thickened it with cornflower. It was lush.

I've made Slimming World's Ocean Pie a couple of times and swapped the quark for Flora Buttery.
