Any suggestions for potato-free family meals?

Coyote72 · 02/11/2024 12:03

Could you suggest any ideas for 5 year old friendly meals that don't involve potatoes? My son annoyingly doesn't like them in any form, he is also the only kid in the world who doesn't like stuff in bread crumbs!

I like us to eat together but I endlessly get bored of dishes!

Does he like dumplings or rice or Yorkshire pudding or pies?

MrsSkylerWhite · 02/11/2024 12:07

Countless rice/ pasta dishes.
Couscous
Yorkshire pudding with roast

Could go on and on. We rarely eat potatoes or things in breadcrumbs.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 02/11/2024 12:07

Up the veg and leave the potatoes out for him. I'd still do say chicken breast or a piece of fish, maybe slice of bread then plenty of veg

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 02/11/2024 12:08

Spag Bol
Sausage tray bake with roasted veg
Curry and rice
Pasta bake
stir fry with noodles
Puff pastry pie with filling of choice (we do mushroom and leek regularly)
Lasagna
Salmon with rice and veg
Fajitas
Tacos

minipie · 02/11/2024 12:10

Curries with rice (plenty of non hot curries)

Casseroles can be served with rice or cous cous or bread

Lentils or beans in place of potatoes. Butter beans make a good mash

That's really good thinking!

Any sort of curry with rice and naan

Anything in flatbreads or wraps - we often do halloumi or lamb in flatbread with hummus, salad or roasted veg, olives - or chicken/veg fajitas - or we’ll do Indian style paneer or chicken in wraps or flatbreads with mango chutney, yoghurt, veg

Toad in the hole or sausages in rolls with whatever toppings.

Fried rice - I make a spam and pineapple fried rice, which is a bit to much UPF meat for eating regularly, but it’s a nice treat and everyone loves it.

We do breakfast for dinner often too - pancakes with bacon and fruit salad, or fried eggs, sausages, hash browns, beans with melon or fruit salad. You can decide if hash browns are too potato-y and omit or sub for something else, just toast is fine.

Risotto (my dc like cheesy tomato and basil best)
Sesame chicken noodles (a favourite in our house) https://www.myfussyeater.com/sesame-honey-chicken-noodles/
Hot dogs
Burgers - these our out current favourites https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/porkanddappleburgerr94249 We also like tuna burgers

Does he like sweet potatoes? If so you could substitute them. Lots of lovely ideas upthread as well.

Haven't tried dumplings, good thinking. Not sure about pies, but will give them a go!

Sadly not, they fall under the same texture issue around potatoes. I was the same as a kid and did eventually just grow out of it / realise potatoes are amazing

Salmon fillet/chicken breast and rice (plus veg)
Stir fry and noodles

Beef and dumplings
Chicken casserole and dumplings
Spag Bol
Mac Cheese
Pizza
Gammon streak, roast veg, no spuds

cheapskatemum · 02/11/2024 18:46

@Coyote72 I didn't like potatoes as a child either! Like you, I love them now. I don't remember sweet potatoes in the supermarkets then: 60s & 70s.

Same in the 90s, I don't think I became aware of them until the 2000s.

Update for this evening, I made a cod and chorizo stew and served it with some rice and garlic bread which went down well and wasn't boring for me!

Am I correct that its the mushy texture that is the issue, more than it being a mashed potatoe? I was going to suggest fish pie/shepherds pie but with celeriac or cauli mash instead, but that is no good if its the texture. You could always just add mash to 3/4 of it, leaving some with no potato. You'd therefore not be making 2 meals.

Ground almonds make a good substitute for breadcrumbs, but again, if its a texture thing, ignore that.

Fajitas- and everyone fills their own wrap with salady bits, beans/chicken/beef, peppers/onions/cheese etc

Paella

Rissoles, onion gravy and veggies of choice

Fish with lemon cous cous and veg

Pasta bake

Willsnbills · 02/11/2024 19:16

Yeah we just eat a lot of pasta and rice based dishes, and then when we have meals with potatoes I sub in bread instead for ds.

AdaColeman · 02/11/2024 19:45

Puy lentils work well instead of potatoes, they keep their texture when cooked, so you don't get that feeling of mushy dread!
Try sausages with puy lentils and onion gravy. The tinned lentils are excellent, and quick to heat up, as well as economical. You can add them to any casserole, and they go well with anything in a sauce or gravy.
Another idea is to use beans, mixed or a single variety, haricots (green or white) cannellini, borlotti etc etc, and don't forget the humble chickpea!

TheSpottedZebra · 02/11/2024 20:12

Couldn't you just swap his potatoes out for rice or pasta sometimes? Cooked rice actually freezes really well as long as you cool it properly and reheat thoroughly. So you could make a load of rice e and freeze some for him in portions, so it's much less faff.

cheapskatemum · 03/11/2024 08:36

@Coyote72 does he mind legumes? Chick peas would be a good addition to your cod & chorizo stew & they are both filling and nutritious. Also, butter beans, haricot, cannellini, borlotti etc. They soak up the lovely flavours in soups, stews & casseroles. Again, your DS might not like the texture, in which case peas & sweetcorn might be acceptable to him.

It did include Butter beans (or 'butt beans' to much hilarity) which he happily ate. He does like chickpeas too

Perfect! My mouth is watering at the thought of it. I made a smokey sausage casserole last night with chickpeas in, which is what reminded me to post.

Grrrrf · 03/11/2024 19:19

I know you've tried bread, but I guess there's a huge variety. Cheese rolls, focaccia rolls with different toppings, flatbreads with different toppings etc, etc (I'm thinking of bakery items tbh from the supermarket rather than homemade).
