Chia pudding is basically frog spawn, what else can I use chia seeds for.

I was hoping to have an easy, low-carb breakfast, but chia pudding makes me gag with the slimy texture. So now I have a whole bag of chia seeds. They are great for fibre and some nutrients so I would like to use them, just not in a slimy way. Any suggestions?

Sprinkle them in soups or salads, in baking instead of poppy seeds. Nit sure they have the same health effects as presoaked but I also can't stand the slimy texture

Probably only works if you have kids - or work with them - soak them for a couple of hours in water then add them into cornflour. Mix it up really well - makes the best slime!

I add a teaspoon to my wild rice or when I have rolled oats for breakfast, I add a teaspoon of chia seeds and a tablespoon of flaxseeds.
As a low carb alternative, gift the bag to a friend.

I just sprinkle them on yoghurt and fruit, or granola, as I'm about to eat it. Then they don't go like frog spawn.

AnnaDelvorkina · 28/10/2024 17:46

As the PP said, don’t soak them. Sprinkle over rice, bake into breads, cookies, muffins, carrot/banana cake, etc., eat with nuts or dried fruit or other seeds, add to salad/stir fry/Poke bowl type dishes, inside sandwiches (with other fillings! e.g tuna, smoked salmon or mackerel, poultry).

Google “chia jam recipe” for some more ideas

JC03745 · 28/10/2024 17:46

I was going to suggest low carb jam- you just mix them with pureed fruit like raspberries/strawberries etc, but its still slimy-ish.

If you can't find a way to use them, put them on the olio app for someone else to use.

I make overnight oats - sometimes! - with toasted oats, toasted chopped nuts, yogurt, milk, agave, chia seeds, fresh/frozen fruit.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 28/10/2024 17:55

I hadn't thought of adding it to sandwiches, I love tuna mayonnaise and it would probably be ok with seeds mixed in.

I wish I could have overnight oats, unfortunately oats spike my blood glucose. I suspect even with yogurt and chia seeds to add protein and fibre it would still not work for me.

Sprinkles for porridge or icecream

Twentybottlesofbeer · 28/10/2024 17:57

This morning I put 20g of flaxseed into a bowl. Added 100g of cooked blueberries on top. Then mixed 200g of Fage with grated lemon and lime peel, 10g of chia and layered on the top.

Refrigerated for a while.

Ate it like a cheesecake. The citrus peel and blueberries work really well and the chia didn't taste slimy (not that I noticed).

blahblahtrue · 28/10/2024 18:02

Agreed ! But try adding dark chocolate coco, slightly more bearable 😂

Havalona · 28/10/2024 18:38

Whole chia seeds are disgusting (to me). I always buy the milled version, same for flaxseed. So many uses then.

If I ever had whole chias I'd probably just throw them into a brown bread loaf or feed them to the birds.

Singleandproud · 28/10/2024 18:39

Overnight oats or even sprinkled on top of things so they don't have time to absorb the liquid

Slimy! Interesting - are you as old as me and able to remember tapioca pudding at school? Now THAT were proper frogspawn....

PS. My easy low-carb breakfast is your username. Spooky!

PPS Never knowingly eaten chia seeds...

Nikitaspearlearring · 28/10/2024 19:00

I have them on my granola every morning, along with lots of other seeds, maca powder etc. It has never occurred to me to soak them, I didn't know you're supposed to.

flashspeed · 28/10/2024 19:02

In smoothies, then you can't really taste them

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 28/10/2024 19:23

@CrystalSingerFan My preferred breakfast is also a black coffee, I'm not a great fan of breakfast. But on gym days I have to have breakfast.

What would you put in a low carb smoothie @flashspeed ? I can't have juice or much in the way of fruit, although strawberries are usually ok so I could use frozen ones. Although, making a smoothie would reduce the fibre content, so even strawberries might spike me without their fibre, I could give it a try though.
