Are these UPF?

Need some meal plans for a family member who is unwell at the moment. He likes a mix of basic veg such as carrot, peas, potatoes, etc, with a coated protein source. Since this is not my own choice I am not going to lecture him about organic, raw alternatives Grin

I was looking at the Bird's Eye tempura chicken but it doesn't get great reviews. So wondered if this M&S version would be better. I can see E numbers in there but at least no bloody palm fat, so maybe it's the best of the bunch?

Has to be something easy to bung in the oven and freeze. I have offered a few healthy ideas but he is clear about this so not going to challenge it. I am doing a batch shop today so need to get it sorted!

Here is the product www.ocado.com/products/m-s-tempura-chicken-tenders-519924011

If you’re worried about micro biome they should be having fermented foods daily - proper kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi - a lot of store bought kombuchas aren’t that beneficial though tbh. But gently, you can’t do this for people. There’s plenty of people who I’d love to abandon seed oils and pappy white bread but you can’t change people. People have to make the changes for themselves.

This UPF stuff is the new diet fad word. Yes we should all chose the less processed option if we can, but this is being thrown around too much. Don't worry about it too much OP.

I'm so tired of food being demonised.

BarbaraHoward · 27/10/2024 16:22

Just ask his favoured brand and buy that. It's controlling to try to change his diet when he isn't well enough to get to the shop himself - he's vulnerable, don't exploit that vulnerability to push your own preferences.

ObliviousCoalmine · 27/10/2024 16:56

@thestudio your microbiome won't be irreparably damaged by eating a crisp or some breaded chicken.

As a PP said, there's a lot you can do for your microbiome; handwringing about a fish finger isn't it.

Dear lord yes, and the last thing you want to do to someone who is poorly is suddenly meddle with their microbiome!

Does the person eating the food care if it's UPF? If not is it really your job to police their diet?

PrincessofWells · 27/10/2024 17:26

I get you op, I don't eat that upf shit either, and contrary to what some posters are saying it may well do him harm due to the very high salt content and the high fat level which can quickly lead to elevated blood pressure and type II diabetes . . .

Did you miss the bit where the OP says she's not going to lecture or challenge her relative ?

She's not going to buy him his choice of food either though.

LadyMoglet · 27/10/2024 20:51

lol at 'controlling'.
When did the food forum turn into AIBU?
Calm you bloody self and take a breather.

He has asked for coated fish and chicken from any brand so long as it isn't breadcrumb. I was going to get the M&S tenders to treat him FFS!

So far we have chosen the Bird's Eye, some Tesco Tenders and several M&S ready meals so at least he's branching out Grin

Thanks for the good advice. I won't be the one preparing the food, only shopping now.

This tickled me:)

I also want to know what 'pappy white bread' is!

You mentioned fish, would he eat Bird's Eye fish fingers? I think there are some you can get with a slightly more "wholesome" coating.

Precipice · 27/10/2024 21:13

Any ready meal will be UPF.
