Snacks for sporty DS9

DS9 plays football every lunchtime and lots at home and does sport 3 times a week.

He doesn't eat fruit. I can't make smoothies with banana as he can smell it. Will only eat grated cheese, not sliced or cubed.

Apart from oat bars, what can he have if he needs to eat on the go?

  • Peanut butter on a tortilla wrap or rice/oat cakes
  • Smoothies without banana
  • Apple
  • I make egg muffins and keep them in the fridge, DD eats them cold or blitzes them for 30 seconds in the microwave. Just cook up whatever veg they like, let it go cold, mix it with half a dozen eggs, pour into cupcake cases in a muffin tin, bit of grated cheese in top, bake till set and then let them cool. Like mini quiches but firmer and without the pastry.
  • bagel with cream cheese

Veggie sticks/dip?

Cheese sandwiches?

Kids Eat In Colour muffins with hidden veggies?

Pepperamis? I know you said he won't eat sliced cheese, but would he eat a lunchables type thing?

Rice cakes - lots of flavours to pick from these days

Yoghurt pouches

How on the go are we talking? A few options:

Muffins - find ones with yoghurt and nuts to up protein. Use a range of flours, not just white.

Wraps with whatever he'd like in them. If he wants hot, they can be air fried and wrapped in foil to take with him. DS quite likes a fish finger wrap in these situatios. I usually add mayo, ketchuip and some grated carrot or similar.

Similarly, when we had to eat on the go we often did crumbed chicken breast things (pre-bought) in a burger roll for eating in the car.

If I remember, I make overnight oats in the morning at breakfast for him to have after school/before sport. Similarly, I sometimes make up some chicken or egg or tuna mayo and then let him have that in a toasted sandwich or in a baguette when he comes in.

If he's doing it himself, it's usually peanut butter toast, or, at a push, scrambled eggs on toast.

-Falafels and homous, or add into a wrap with grated cheese/salad or whatever he eats
-Celery sticks with peanut butter down the centre
-Boiled eggs
-Chicken drumstick with foil as a handle
-Quiche with whatever veg/meat he eats or these mini ones which are easy to transport and eat on the go https://www.amummytoo.co.uk/filo-pastry-mini-quiches-great-for-kids-to-make-and-eat/

-This is a home-made version of nutella, but uses black beans to increase fibre and protein. If you made a gradual change over time, he might never know its healthier than the real stuff.

Makes 550g
100g hazelnut butter
400g tin of black beans, drained and rinsed
4 tablespoons of cocoa powder 2 tablespoons of butter or coconut oil
4 tablespoons of raw honey
2 teaspoons of vanilla extract A small pinch of sea salt
Method

  1. Add all the ingredients to a food processor or high-powered blender and pulse to the desired consistency.
  2. Transfer the spread to a sterilised jar and store in the fridge for up to three weeks.
  3. Enjoy!

Will he eat fruit crumble? I know you said no fruit but fruit puddings are sometimes an exception.

If he does, then I every now and then stew up a big pot, it's from my odds and ends bag in the freezer which has all the chopped up, just about to go bad fruit thrown into it, usually a mix of plums, apples and berries.

Then I freeze it in portion sized ziplocks. Great for adding to porridge, warming up and serving with cream, putting in a tin with sponge mix or crumble topping on top for a quick baked pudding.

If no to the fruit then Greek yoghurt is a good choice, you could just expand your repertoire a little, I like it with crushed pecans and maple syrup, or vanilla extract and fruit coulis, or a blob of jam.

Muller Rice puddings, protein version, have gone down well with my sporty DS. 13/14g protein in a pot, chocolate or vanilla flavours.

Also protein pancakes from M&S fresh, or frozen Griddle Original High Protein waffles that you just put in the toaster. Smear both with nutella (and Berries if he'll eat them).
