Waitrose

They're closing down my (reasonably priced) local supermarket, 7 minutes walk from my house and turning it into a Waitrose.

Now much as I like dainty olives in Pyrenean goats cheese I can't afford it. Simple as. And nor can most of my local area.

Quite pissed off about this as I will now have to drive to the next closest supermarket which will be a right faff.

I feel I am being priced out!

same problem in marlborough
your choice there is waitrose or M&S simply food
or a drive of at least half an hour to a sainsburys

its a pity. although I agree if you shop carefully in waitrose you can do OK... but it is more expensive overall (better quality but still)

oiFoiF · 24/04/2008 12:44

they sell normal food aswell you know
chappie is the same price in waitrose as it is in asda for example

I don't think waitrose is any more expensive than other places for normal and branded stuff. It does have the fancy stuff if you want it but you aren't obliged to buy it.

I shop at waitrose because it is on my way home from work.

Its the fruit section that always gets me, same as in M&S. Just soo much delicious stuff, and at only £2.99 a throw..

You've just got to take a list and absolutely not deviate from it.

they had this problem when the Sheffield one was opened - first few weeks it was full of full-on local accents saying 'how much???'. I always spend at least 10% more in Waitrose than Sainsbos, but I think it's the gorgeous stuff, too.

themoon66 · 24/04/2008 13:21

Every time I call into waitrose to buy 'just milk' on my way home from work, it costs me between £20 and £30.

Only last week, called for a 4 pinta bottle and came out with mangos, vegetarian ready meals, lincolnshire sausages, two bottles of organic wine, 4 Duchy original chocolate moussses, 1 Duchy original lemon torte and a tiramisu.

Don't feel you have to shop there. There has to be a way round it. If everyone does the same as you, the shop will have to go out of business, or lower its prices.

Could you fnd out if there is an Aldi or Lidl anywhere near you? You could do a big monthly shop for all your non-perishables (pasta, rice, tinned stuff, frozen stuff, household goods etc) and you would save so much it would be worth the petrol and time and effort. Then you could just use the Waitrose shop for top-up shopping. Also, are there any greengrocers, butchers, corner shops etc near where you live. Sometimes these places are actually cheaper and better quality than supermarkets (especially if you are comparing them with Waitrose prices!).

MrsMattie · 24/04/2008 14:16

Don't shop there. Find somewhere else, further afield. Waitrose shopping = nice for certain things, but mostly a complete pisstaking exercise, where you're charged astronomical prices for the fancy cellophane wrapping around 4 bog standard pears. Bonkers.

When the Safeway in a challenging area of town was turned into a Waitrose, the opening day was hilarious. They drafted in Partners from other stores whilst the Safeway staff were "JLP'd" on a course. There was a Q of people at the bakery counter asking where the 11p Safeway loaves of bread had gone and the air was thick with cries of "how blooody much". I was at the Customer Services desk and the woman serving said " I shall be glad to get back to Marlborough" PMSL.

The problem is Waitrose doesnt have the really cheap own-brand stuff you can get in Tesco and Asda, which is generally fine, and massively cheaper than the branded alternative. I only have a local M&S and Waitrose, but keep my shopping there to a minimum, and have a Tesco delivery once a fortnight
